Hello, my name is Mike and this is my first post here. I am planning on making cigar box guitars which was a very popular thing to do during the Depression Era. I am interested in getting the nicer larger sizes of solid wood empty cigar boxes of the more famous non Cuban(I can't use the Cuban cigar boxes for resell in the U.S.) made brands like Cohiba red dot, Fuente Opus X(if I can find a size large enough), Partagas limited reserve and any brands with interesting artwork on it like ships or horses. Sizes I need are around 11" long x 7" wide x 2" deep and larger sizes would be better.
I would prefer to deal with one good source for these empty cigar boxes and maybe there is a high end cigar shop owner on here who would be willing to send them to me. I would be willing to make a guitar using the cigar box of your choice for you and pay for shipping of the cigar boxes to me in trade for getting a large variety of the high end cigar boxes around 50 to 100 in qty.
Please e-mail me privately on what you can deliver and what you would be interested in trading for them.
Most B&Ms I know will either give you empty boxes or ask for a small contribution. I'd start there (my wife has made purses out of some boxes and that's how we got them for her).

I did stop by a few cigar shops recently and most of them had been cleaned out of all empty cigar boxes due to people bought them for Christmas. The boxes I was interested in still had cigars in them and the cigar shops will sell them cheaply, but I have to be there on the right day to get that box when it becomes available/empty. None of the shops were interested in holding the empty cigar boxes I wanted when they finally become empty and available. All the shops I went to do sell the empty cigar boxes as soon as they are empty.
I'm not a smoker, but I have read issues of Cigar Aficionado and it is a cool magazine with interesting articles. Time is money and I don't want to involve too much time going to several cigar shops constantly trying to get the nicer cigar boxes. I was hoping to find someone who has a large supply of the nicer empty cigar boxes and we could work out a deal for them or trade for a guitar I make using one of the cigar boxes.
SubChop, I will still go to some of the shops and buy a few empty cigar boxes locally once in awhile. It may be harder for me to get the really nice solid wood boxes here due to I'm in Utah and this state is not the cigar capitol of the United States. A few of the shops do carry the high end brands, but it's limited as far as to what they stock here.

Shipping charges are higher on eBay, but that seems to be a trend on eBay lately. I want to avoid all the time involved in going to several cigar shops here or the time involved in winning 25 to 50 eBay auctions.
If I can find a cigar shop owner who will hold the cigar boxes I want say over the whole year of 2008 as they become empty and ship 10 to 20 of them to me at a time then I have to make it worth while for that person. If I pay for shipping charges and make them a cigar box guitar with some special touches on it like the name of their cigar store on the headstock then it could be a store display. I'm in no rush for this to happen and shipping charges are not a big deal. The bigger problem is finding the right person willing to do it that has the high end brands of solid wood cigar boxes in the larger sizes needed for cigar box guitars.

I know there is a certain CAO Maduro 10th Annverisary box that I think would be really good for a guitar. Plus it has suede on the top and bottom for a little extra touch to it. Its all red, its a swell box. I dont have one, but if you can find one on the net that would be great for a guitar.
