Mr. G,
Have you had that particular San Cristobal before? I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your review.

Today I received the following smokes, expertly packaged, from Thaterp:
Carlos Torano 1916 601 (red label) Indian Tabac Natural, Box Pressed
I have never tried any of these cigars and am excited to review the 601 (as requested by Thaterp). Review to follow as soon as I can get some peaceful smoking time in!
The cigar that Smoking Gun wanted me to review out of the generous supply of smokes was the:
San Cristobal Classico Origin: Nicaragua Wrapper: Corojo Size: Robusto Made by: Don Pepin Garcia Paired with: Sailor Jerry's Rum and Coke
Start: 8:35 End: 9:45
Appearance/construction: 14/15 This has a very oily wrapper with a nice sheen on it. There are a few small veins but nothing to be concerned about.
Flavor: 22/25 1/3- The first puff was packed with a spicy kick. I like the draw and the very slick oily wrapper, it almost slides out of my hand. After the first few puffs the spiciness calms down and hints of cocoa come to the surface. The smoke has a very rich dark chocolate smell which is very pleasing. It started to burn way uneven so I set it down for a couple minutes and it is starting to even out. Toward the end of the 1/3 the flavor is changing to a wood and spice flavor. I am starting to feel the kick of the strength of this cigar. 2/3- The ash is still holding strong but I had to give it a touch up with the trusty old Xikar. The strength has been medium from the start but it is building its power. It really does feel like the cigar is gonna slip out of my hand. Onto the flavor. The wood is still there, but there is something else that I can't put my finger on. It is almost a meaty taste...oops there goes the ash all over me, a good 2 1/2 inches. 3/3- The strength is shifting gears and it is becoming full bodied. Very spicy on the tongue and nose. A cedar taste is very noticeable with spice in the background. The burn is now completely even but I am getting a little heat on the lips. The finish is very short and clean.
Smoking Characteristics: 20/25 The draw was good but it was a little tight for what I consider perfect. The burn started out bad but after I touched it up it held on till the end. It got a little bit of heat towards the end which I do not like.
Overall Impression: 32/35 This was a very good cigar. I have had the Monumento and this was nothing like it. It had a great oily wrapper and I looked forward to each puff. Draw and burn is huge for me so that is what took the points off. It was a bit spicy but not overpowering. I did feel very relaxed while smoking this and I look forward to buying a box of these in the future.
Thanks for the pass SG. Once again I can't wait for round 3!!!
Score: 88

DPG 601 Red Label Habano Robusto Review - thanks Thaterp for the smokes
The cigar is well constructed with a light oily sheen. I gave it a few days in my 'dor to settle in before I smoked her.
The draw is easy and it starts off with a blast of spice and a intense nutty flavor. If you want to smoke something that you can familiarize yourself with a cigar description of nutty, look no further. This is a strong start and I am smoking slow. A lot of spice and a long spicy finish. A small touch up was made to even out the wrapper. Ideally, I would have wanted to stabilize the smoke in the humidor for a week, but I am a bit impatient when it comes to smoking new cigars (I never smoked the 601 red before).
The first third is starting to lessen a bit in spice while the nutty flavor remains with a bit of licorice and some saltiness.
Approaching the mid point and the flavor profile has changed gears to reveal a meaty tobacco core with a floral tone. The nut and spice have subsided. This theme has continued into the last third. The tobacco is pretty strong for a NC and a little buzz follows.
Overall, I enjoyed the flavors of the smoke. I'd recommend smoking only on a full stomach, as the cigar is strong, specifically in the first third.
I smoked a Rocky Patel Sun Grown tonight that I received from ldfkr14 earlier in the week. To pair with the smoke I chose to drink iced tea.
Start time: 9:05 Finish: 10:10
I liked the color of the Sun Grown wrapper. I had never smoked one before and this one really stood out in my humidor due to the the color.
1/3 A harsh woody note was the first thing to hit my pallet. It really started spicy but died down within in the first half inch.
2/3 The smoke really settled down. The burn was perfect and even. I was very pleased with how slow it went. After the immediate spiciness the Rocky SG really mellowed out. I tasted a little sweetness, almost honey like. Bellows of smoke came out after every puff.
3/3 The mellowness continued until the very end when some spiciness picked back up with hints of cedar.
I was pleased with the burn, draw and amount of smoke this cigar produced. It was very mellow and went nicely with my choice of beverage.
I would give this a rating of 87 and feel like I need to smoke a couple more as I could see this could really pull me in with a little more experience with it.
Ldfkr14, thanks for the great smoke. Once again I have enjoyed our pass and hope that we can continue it down the road.

Why don't you do the Coronado DC
BTW, got my package from Mr.G, NICE! I'll try to get mine done asap, but I'm on afternoons for the next 7, so we'll see what time permits.
the coronado dc got bent a bit and the wrapper split about 1 in up the foot. i didnt bring it with me to school either so i think ill review the padron for tonight, maybe the coronado DC when i get back home in a week or 2

I'll second Mr. G's response. What I'd like to do is wait a couple weeks to get our next pass going and then have our 4th pass be a special Christmas edition selection.
Any thoughts on this?
I definitely don't want to turn this into something where you feel like you have to go spend lots of money on a cigar to send, but maybe just a special one from your current stash.
