I grow more and more frustrated with the search function on this forum every day. Maybe I am just too dumb to know how to use it, but I can never find what I'm looking for. I am sure that there is a post somewhere with the answer to this question, but I can't find it, so if you can point me to it, or just answer the question here I will be most appreciative.

I am a "noob" at least as far as the forum and cigar trading goes. I'm not looking to start trading or anything yet, but I am trying to find some explinations on what a Bombing Run is and how it works. Also trying to find some general rules and guidelines on the other types of trading that go on. I assume there are some that are at lest a little less complicated than BinDer's Hold'em pass.

Thanks for the help.

Poking around some more this is what I have been able to discern for myself. Please correct me if I am wrong.

A "bombing run" is some just sending out a few cigars to another member of the board without expecting anything in return.

What is the protocol for this? Just pick someone?

For example, say I have enjoyed a discussion on the board with "member X". I decide he's a cool guy and want to get his opinion on a couple of smokes I tried so I ask him for his mailer and send him a few sticks.

Is that a "bombing run" or is there a list you pick people from or whatever... Just need some clarification.

that looks like the way things are done here Matt. I just built up enough cigars to be able to do this myself.

In fact, send me an email with your address and I will send you something to try.

"Bombing Runs" are totally random (for lack of a better way to put it) "attacks". There is no list or anything. Yeah, you usually bomb people who have given you good info, raised topics that piqued your interest, or whose threads you generally enjoy reading. Some guys just tend to bomb as a good way to curry favour with older members.

It was not until recently that such acts of kindness and generosity were even documented. I think it was AndyMiami (I may be wrong) who started the Bombing Runs thread. Just by looking through there you can learn a lot about the relationships that are/have been built here. Guys bomb each other on their birthdays, anniversarys, or just for the hell of it.

One caveat, however, a bomb, PIF, trade, pass, etc is NOT for cleaning out your humidor. Quantity over quality is rarely a good rule of thumb. CA seems to be a pretty karmic place. What goes around tends to come around. Don't be the screwer lest you become the screwee.

That's my 2 cents. Hope it helps. Sure there are some other guys who will offer more info.

its a good way to get to know people. there are a lot of great guys here, and they are very very generous, but do what you can. they are gifts so no one expects all that you have. it is also a good way to build a reputation, for passes and trades. good luck.

That was a nightmare! It was just too complicated and it never got off the ground. Currently there are only three real types of passes going on here:

PIF- A Pay It Forward pass, named after the movie. It is just a kind of Karma chain, not a large commitment, just send the best you can.

Box Pass- These are basically a big cigar swap. They usually start with someone sending out a box with a fair amount of cigars say, 20-30. The rules vary but generally you take a specified amount, replace them with like quality cigars and then pass it on to th enext on the list. You have to arrange a pass list, addresses, etc. These are large, expensive and risky passes to launch, but generally are the most rewarding. Box passes can get lost or stolen, so there is some risk involved.

R.A.T.S.- I basically started this as an alternative to the other two types of pass. It's like it sounds, a Ring Around The Stogies, person 1 gives to 2, 2 to 3, etc. It requires less preparation than a full blown pass and the number of cigars has been 5, though some give more. It requires less prep than a box pass and I have my GF draw the names from a hat, so even I don't know who has who until the packages arrive and people start posting. It's karma driven, so people send the best they can and everyone always seems happy.

If there are any other types of pass, I don't know about them. Most are variations on a theme, like a guy will send out two boxes of a nice cigar and people will take a couple and put in a variety of others, this way the owner gets back a wide selection of smokes. Other passes will state you have to include a gag gift for the next recipient of the box pass, or the cigars used will have a theme, like maduros, etc.

I haven't been on the board lately. Had jaw surgery and haven't been able to smoke for almost two weeks and still have two more, but I wanted to thank Raven for the huge bomb he sent me. Some good cigars in that bomb except for the La Viejas. Just Kidding! I'm curious to see how these are since you smoke quite a few. I'm guessing the unbanded robusto was one of your outdoorsmans. Looking forward to smokingthe R&J CC and that Cuesta Rey is one I've been wanting to try. Thanks for the bomb.

I was wondering what happened to you my friend. I hope the surgery went ok.

There are 2 La Vieja cigars one is the less expensive one I like for the price and the other is a La Vieja Leather Patch its a much better and expensive cigar. I figured you had never tried them so I wanted to send you something you may not have tried before. The one without a band is a JR Honduran Factory Corojo Robusto. Its another less expensive cigar I smoke from time to time they run about a dollar a stick. The Cuban RjY is a well traveled cigar, it started in Cuba then to Canada then to Germany (bought it at the Canadian Air Force PX at Ramstein Air Force Base) then to Alabama where it sat in my humidor since Dec then to you. I think I threw a Punch Magnum Double Maduro and one in EMS. Sorry about some of them being cheapies its just a reflection of what I smoke and had in my humidor. I am glad you got this package. I still wonder what happened to the one I mailed you when you were in Iraq. I bet some Military mail clerk enjoyed them. I hope you get well soon and enjoy the smokes.
