I have read and spoken to many about their opinions about smoking cigars. When to smoke cigars, how to smoke cigars, etc., etc.

The question is this - How far down do most cigar smokers smoke their cigars? one third the way down; half way down; two thirds down; just to the band; to and including the band; past the band; what if the cigar has no band; till it burns your fingers and lips?

I'm wondering what you do and why?!

Quit when the cigar is no longer enjoyable.

I am in complete agreement. If you aren't enjoying it, then what is the purpose.

My problem is that sometimes I try to "force pleasure." Say a cigar has been fantastic and it starts to turn a little bitter, I may keep smoking it just because until then it has been superb.

I'm trying to break this habit, but I'm also a poor college student, so maybe I'm subconsciously trying to get the most bang for my buck.

With almost 50-years of cigar smoking under my belt I consider myself an expert.

I think one should smoke a cigar when one has the time to relax and enjoy the experience.

As to how much to smoke? I have had some cigars that I smoked until I burned my lips and then wanted more, and I have smoked a few that were so dissatisfying that I wondered how they ever made it to market.

Unlike cigarette smoking which is an unfortunate habit for so many smokers, cigar smoking is an experience to be savored. It is (IMHO) a pity that more people do not enjoy this experience and a shame that so many people lump cigars and cigarettes together and call for a smoking ban.

I have a crazy friend who would smoke the band! I think he just did it when he could be guaranteed attention! Razz Anyhow, I go to a couple inches. Heck I paid for it ... yeah, really as long as it is not making you "wish you hadn't".

Completely agree with thaterp. And with Doc about taking the time to enjoy a cigar.

I would also add the that smoking in the company of other CA's also increases the cigar enjoyment, as well as paring the cigar with a good beer, wine, or spirit.

Finally add in the music of your choice, or the sounds of mother nature.

Relax and enjoy.

I have smoked stogies until they have burned me, and some less than 1 inch. Smoke it until you are done enjoying it.

Hey IB Vitola
Long time no see.
How are you my friend.
I will say this how much of a cigar i smoke is related to how much i enjoy it.I never put out a cigar early because i am in a rush.I never refuse to put out a cigar because of what it cost. Some cigars i smoke to the nub. While others i toss after a couple of puffs.I really can not say i toss a half or a third of a cigar. For me if i enjoy it i see no sense in wasting it.By the same token if i do not like it i have no intent of wasting my time.

Hey SHB, I take your quote above as a compliment, thanks.

I have as I mentioned in my original post, I have read and spoken to many and through my own experimentation it seems that somewhere between one third and two thirds down, the cigars taste will turn, and not for the better (tar and nicotine collect) at this point the cigar has given-up its true essence and turn sour. When this sourness occurs, the cigar has reached it's peck enjoyment point, it's all downhill from there. Time to put it down.

Generally, I agree, stop smoking when you're not enjoying it.

The "official" rule is to smoke your cigar no more than half way. Zino Davidoff called anyone who smoked more than that a "barbarian."

However, the majority of cigar smokers echo the sentiments listed in this thread, which is: smoke it until you no longer enjoy it, no matter how much or little that is.
