And the forums, of course. Had my first cigar last night, a La Aurora 100 Anos Robusto. I'm assuming it's typical to feel nauseas and lightheaded afterward?
Anyway, as it's my first of hopefully many, I can't say a whole lot about what I like or dislike so far. I can say, however, that it was an interesting experience despite the discomfort that soon followed.
Pretty much all I have to say at this point, besides hello to all the forum members and howdy to my fellow Texans. I hope to have an active and productive time here on the CA boards.
Happy smoking.

for your disconfort, it probably has to do with the excess nicotine you ingested while smoking a cigar....
try smoking light coloured cigars in the beginning and avoid swallowing too much of your saliva while msoking.. these will help reduce you nicotine intake... and the lighter cigars tend to be smoother to smoke as well, so that might be more suitable to a new cigar smoker....
Just to add to Sal's comment, if you find your mouth watering a lot while smoking, it is probably too strong to your liking. Since it was your first cigar, you probably have accidentally inhaled some of the puffs or smoked it too quick (like a cigarette). Those also make you feel queasy afterwards.
To add my own, be sure you eat before you smoke. If you ever are super-nauseated drink water and try the sugar packet trick (works for me). It is perfectly normal to get slightly nauseated, primarily because you need to spend a little time getting used to the form of smoking a cigar (not inhaling, drawing once a minute, etc.)
again, Welcome! You will soon realize that you have stepped into the center of a very wonderful addiction.

Yeah, wow, I think I smoked that a bit fast. I think I only accidentally inhaled once, but I was puffing away much faster than once a minute. Guess I can start there. I did actually eat before I started and was drinking water during.
Didn't feel a whole lot of excess saliva like my friends have reported. In any event, I picked up a Macaduno Gold and a Pleiades (one I've not heard of) which my local B&M said would be on the mild side.
Thanks for the tips and welcome everyone.

Yupper- ez does it! Welcome- indeed it is best not to have an empty stomach. I don't think you need to puff as slowly as one puff a minute, but every person is different. I've also found that what some people find strong I don't, what some find mild I don't! So, be in tune with your feelings; don't make yourself sick, but don't let a designation of ""full bodied" necessarily scare you away!
One thing I think all can agree on: this ain't a cheap hobby!
ENJOY!

Welcome to the forum Hydra! I've been smoking cigars for about sixteen years and have to admit i got a little green last night, so see it still happens everyonce in a while even if your a longtime smoker.

For the nausea and lightheadedness (if that is even a word) I have been told by many a good trick is to drink a can of coke. Hasn't really happened to me but others I know and trust swear by it.

One tip I follow on the speed of smoking is if you are smoking too fast, when you ash for the first time your cigar will be “pointy” or look like a torpedo at the end. By taking your time it add to the experience of the cigar as well. For a new guy I always highly recommend an Ashton Cabinet. They are very smooth and have a great taste for a milder cigar. Also the Perdomo lot 23 is an enjoyable new smoke.
