I'm outraged; and if I were a registered Republican, I would be absolutely furious!
In the last eight years, Cheney, Rove, Bush & Co. have done more damage to America than any other administration in history; and they have done more damage to the Republican Party than any group of people ever.
How can you look at the results of this election and NOT blame Bush & Co., at least partially?
The White House and both sides of Congress easily go the the Democrats? Really??
Four to six years ago, many people thought the first realistic black candidate for President would be a Republican, Colin Powell. Now, after Powell long ago parted ways with BushCo, we actually have a black President-Elect, but he's a Democrat.
In late 2008, it now feels like we have one dominant political party in the USA; but this is a large, diverse country that deserves even more than two dominating parties.
What happened, Republicans?? Why did you weaken your party by putting so much faith in a troop of secretive, law-breaking, money-hungry, anti-social, oil-crazy, war-hawk fundamentalist psychopaths?? Maybe faith is part of the problem.
I think the religious right bears a huge responsibility for this. Think back to August, 2001. The big issue was what policy would be set on setting stem-cell research, and W came down on the side of the "life begins at conception" crowd, setting limits on gathering stem cells.
Then 9/11 happened. It was correct to go to Afghanistan and put those people on the defensive. It was NOT correct to extend the issue beyond that known safe haven of borderless terrorists.
Between the greed, corruption, limitless spending, xenophobia, sex scandals, tacit approval of dismantling the constitution, there is plenty of credit to go around. It was plain and simple hubris.
I'm hoping that was a Republican trait or an "old-boy's-club" trait that Obama can guard against. We had unchecked power for almost a decade and the rivets of the nation are popping out.
I think one of the best things about Obama is that he's NOT like that. I'd be extremely surprised if he ended up being that way. Every sense that I've gotten about him is that he listens to everybody and includes all opinions in his decision making process, but keeps his own counsel - that he's a consensus builder and he will not hesitate to tell Pelosi or whoever when she's out of line.
I also think we'll see plenty of sensible Republicans in his administration.
I wonder what the next four years have in store for us. I'm hopeful that America and the Democratic and Republican Parties can heal from the past eight years of darkness. And I'd really appreciate it if a few more political parties would step up to the plate.
