There's really nothing about this great hobby on the boards yet, so I wanted to take a minute and ask if anyones involved in this. I'm rather new to it and haven't found the time to find my first cache yet. Do you like it or are the treasures a bit of a let down? I'm thinking of starting one up for Cigars but it'd obviously have to be in the more temperate months. If I do it closer to my home, maybe I could bury it and put hand warmers in every other day to keep it consistant. WHo knows. I'll see if it even happens depending on the response I get. I'd take any help anyone would care to offer, either physically, or just in the way of ideas. If you're interested in finding out more about this (not what I've set up, but what others have been doing for a few years) check out this site. http://www.geocaching.com/ Respond to this post with your thoughts. Thanks.
My brother is big into geocaching. It could be cool with cigars. I wouldn't worry about the temp all that much. Don't do it in the dead of summer or winter and you should be OK and put them in a completely airtight container. Also, you might think of using tubos because they would give an added bit of protection. Keep in mind though that if someone didn't find your cache relatively quickly and remove the cigars they would probably just go bad when the weather changed.
Hard work may pay off eventually but laziness always pays off now.
I can't imagine geocaching a cigar, but knock yourself out.
I have a friend who does a lot of backpacking and hiking and he geocaches a good bit. Not because he ever finds anything interesting...according to him they are empty most of the time...but because he's a total geek and loves to play with his GPS gadget. He usually puts in nonperishable items like batteries, suntan lotion, bandaids, comic books, etc.
Homestarrunner-I've got a buddy who won the video contest on that site earlier this summer. It it some damn funny stuff.
Geocaching-I know it hasn't been done for Cigars yet, but I was thinking that I could put one somewhere in the Chicagoland area (where I live) and just kind of start one of the games I've seen before on these boards. Starting with 20 or so in the box, take however many you want and replace what you take with what you brought. I'd ask only premium brands and blends. So it's kind of like the game that goes on regularly on these boards, except it's an unpoliced/unregulated medium. If you wanted all 20, take all 20, just replace them with 20 of your own. I could moderate and if you're going to take a trip to the cache, you'd just let me know and than go get whatever your heart desires. If someone steals them all, I'll know who it had to have been, or at least who it could have been if someone would have visited it again after their first, successful, visit. I could buy a lock that has a code that when you email/mail/call me for permission, i'd give to you. As long as we're all honest, it could be really fun. What do you think about this? I wouldn't start this before I had a method of storing the cigars that wouldn't lead to their damage and I'd front the initial offering of smokes. I only have a desireable selection so it'd start out with a lot of good sticks. Maybe after like 5 visits, we'd change who policed it and maybe they'd have to buy a new lock. Just to ensure safety. This could be really fun and a way for all of us to enjoy GREAT smokes for free.
maybe if someone was traveling, they could take the cache into a different part of the country so it wouldn't just be limited to Chicago where it'd be started. Obviously someone in that area would have to than take over watching it to ensure security, quality environment, ect. Details of that could be worked out later. I don't want to alienate people in other areas though.
This would work well with an OtterBox/Cigar Caddy. Using Tubos would help. Alas the cigar smoking population is small and I bet the cigar smoking/geocaching population is even smaller. If you put one anywhere near NJ, let me know, I'm game.
I've got contacts in both NJ and around LA so maybe it could just rotate around the country and whoever was requesting the location move could rally the troops in that area. If you guys would be serious about this, we should try to drum up interest in any way we'd know. My guess is most of these guys don't know what GeoCaching is. I bet more would be up for it if they didn't see the topic title and have their first reaction be "what the hell is that". You know?
I'm always looking to expand my collection so anyway we can get this going would be fine with me. I'd love to have the opportunity to pick and choose and try what I'd want for no fee. Just leaving what I've already had enough of out of my own stash would be a price I'd be willing to pay.
