...what they charge for cigars is taxes. Certainly there are other factors...but based on this State tax table...all I have to say is, thank the Lord I live in NC.

People aren't smoking cigars to be trendy, cool or stylish. They're smoking cigars because they like them. Because they enjoy the experience. Because for about $5 they can spend an hour sampling one of life's greatest luxuries.

It would seem that should be against the law. How can these states use taxes as a way to make something illegal? They should have the guts to outlaw it if they want it gone.
The funny thing is people just go out of state via the internet to avoid paying the taxes. Now the state has cheated themselves out of collecting any taxes from cigar sales as well as the sales tax.

BTW altough this doesn't show it the Georgia Excise tax on cigars is 23% and pipe tobacco is 10%.
I have been open since August 7th and I have paid almost $9000 in tobacco taxes.

The tax in Michigan are bad but I do enjoy picking up a few singles here and there from a local store.

Agreed! I put this another way...if smoking is the deadly danger that is claimed, then politicians are accessories to murder for not making this illegal. Therefore, they should either ban tobacco or stop the smoking bans and the public hysteria re smoking. We should challenge them to this, since they will NEVER give up the huge tax $$$.

The taxes are really low in Ky, but then again you would have to live in Ky to enjoy that tax. A former Ky native, I would rather pay the higher taxes and NOT live in Ky.

If I recall properly, there is this phrase in the Constitution of the United States of America which says “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, the fact that we have government “protecting” us from what isn’t “safe” in their eyes is a problem.

Smoking is a matter of choice, if you choose to smoke, then do so, if you choose not to smoke, then don’t light up. It should be a matter of respect, not law. Smokers <and I used to be a cigarette smoker> should be respectful of nonsmokers, if I were with a bunch of friends and I was the only one who smoked, I would go downwind or wait until I separated from the group to light up. The same goes for non-smokers, if you don’t want to be surrounded by smoke, move somewhere else, go upwind. But to legislate that smoking is bad for you and then make sure that smokers are ostracized everywhere they go is just plain wrong.

Funny how the democratic states have the highest tax, for example:
Washington 129.42% Wholesale Price

Like Regan said "Republicans wish every day was the 4th of July. Democrats wish every day was April 15th."

When the camacho maduros first came out I emailed Christian Eiroa asking where I can purchase them online and he asked me where I live. I told him I live in the san fernando valley and he directed me to Larry at smoke N sticks, my local shop, by name. I thought that was pretty classy. He knows that Larry is getting reamed with high taxes but rather than direct me to any one of the dozens of websites that carry the camacho maduros for a cheaper price, he directs me to my local shop. His rationale was that regardless of the fact that I will end up buying half as many of his cigars because the prices are twice as high, at least Larry will stay in business. I buy singles from my local shop almost every weekend and order bulk purchases online.

I know that in the Scuba industry, you can get much better prices over the internet. The only downside to that, is 90% of the manufacturers don’t authorize internet/mail order sales, nor do they certify the service techs for these companies. Things may run you a bit more at “ye olde brick and mortar” shop, but as a scuba diver, where else are you gonna get your air? I’d like to see an internet retail shop for that.

With cigars, I don’t feel it’s that much different. I am willing to support my local smoke shop, in fact they’re opening a new location this week, can’t wait to make the grand opening. It’s a great way to get singles, and be able to try a myriad of different smokes without out having to put out a lot of money for ‘em. Plus it’s also nice to be able to get decent recommendations, hell, last time I was in the area, I stopped by just to show off my now 18 month old daughter. <Made sure no body was in smoking before bringing her in!> next time you place an order with one of the online folks, engage ‘em in a conversation about families, and see how far it gets you. There is just something about the familiar person behind the counter with a smile and a smoke. Anyway, enough rambling. I think I left the point of this thread behind a little bit <a LOT>, and that is the government tax rates. While I feel that the shop should get their percentage, I’m not sure how much the government should be getting out of it, if anything it should be the same as the state sales tax, nothing more.

Here in CO, the *VOTERS* just approved a major tobacco tax increase. It's hard to complain about the Gub'ment when the Gub'ment is YOU.

Problem here is that non-smokers simply outnumber smokers. It's always easier to raise somebody else's taxes rather than your own.

Yeah, it's getting to be the same everywhere! Only a non-caring, wealthy person would buy cigars by the box here. Every local cigar man that I know, gets his seegars over the net or by mail. The local smoke shops have expanded their merchandise (beer, wine, collectables) to offset their losses because of the crushing taxes.
I guess most Americans are ignorant of their history.....high taxes stoked the fires of Revolution!! Big Grin

Actually can't escape the WA state tax that easily any more. If you buy from out of state internat sales they try and find you. The state has been getting contact info from JR now for a while and then sending the buyer a bill for the taxes. So watch out they are after you.
