With so many politicians in the United States vested in American defeat in Iraq, what will they do now that the surge is apparently working. One of the biggest critics of the war, Congressman John Murtha, is now apparently admitting that the surge is a success. He did give the caveat that the surge is only working because of the large number of troops; however, isn't that the entire point of the surge? What do you think? As my son is going into the Marine Corps in June, I would rather we were not at war, so I am conflicted on this issue.

Fat Weed Esq- Correct you are that the surge is working, and now the dems are looking for something else to give them a shot at the presidency. After all, after being invested in defeat for four years, they have to concede that maybe, just maybe our President is a little smarter than they thought and also that maybe most Americans don't want to lose a war. Things in Iraq have turned around and you can bet if they hadn't, the dems would not say so. The American voting public will largely be angry at the dems for wanting to give up on us (the troops) as well as badmouthing our troops (Haditha) and their new commander-Gen. Patreaus. Finally, God Bless your son for wanting to serve but make sure he checks out the Air Force, we have an overwhelmingly better quality of life and have only lost 41 in the war on terror thusfar, pretty safe odds. If you have any questions about the Air Force, I'd be glad to answer them. I cannot tell you how many Soldiers and Marines have told me that they wish they would've joined the Air Force.

Can we believe any news that comes out of that place? The press have bowed to government and corporate pressures to give "balanced" POV. This has led to a coverage that 90% of the time beats the administration's drum and 10% of the time shows the down and dirty.
The rest of the world gets the down and dirty but that is pooh poohed by domestic reactionaries as "anti-Americanism".
The common sense opinion on this is that certain elements in Iraq are simply waiting for the Americans to leave.

Don't know what coverage you"ve been watching the past four-five years, you've got that backwards. The media has done everything they possibly could to undermine our progress, when my friends came back from a tour in Iraq they could not believe how the media has tilted this thing in a negative light. Sure, some factions (terrorist) are waiting on us to leave, but the secret is that we most likely wont. We are still in Germany, Japan and Korea. What the media tried to do to us in the military has been entirely shameful. They highlighted every negative and did not report anything positive.

I don't think the media have been particularly negative about the military and the people that are serving in it. I have not seen many generals complain about the media. At least not much, not lately.
As for private sector contractors that shoot first and then make up a story to explain the aftermath. These are mercenaries doing what they love. Whether it is in central America, Southern Africa or Iraq these SOFs will do as their chosen vocation dictates.
As for the media's treatment of military personnel that have been injurred. The media have done somewhat of a good job helping some unfortunate soldiers get due compensation for their injuries despite government blockades to short change them.
It is apparent the surge is working by providing the security needed for reconciliation to take place. Meanwhile, our soldiers and marines are fighting and dying for a corrupt Iraqi government that has no intention of reconciling with the Sunnis. IMHO, we should withdraw major combat forces and covertly support the Sunnis against the Iranian backed Shia. This will allow us to bleed Iran like they are currently doing to us. Besides, every country needs to go through a civil war.

GOD bless your son for joining the Marine Corps. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Marines.

The Fox News article by Heather Nauert is certainly inquisitive of the retired General Sanchez's criticism of the media.
She states: I’m suspicious of the general’s timing. Sanchez is said to be considering writing a book. No doubt his frank statements about the media and the war in general were an attempt to lure in publishers. "Look, I can make headlines! I can sell books! Give me a book deal!"

Just speaking as someone who has bee here over the past three years. Even though I was once able to travel outside the wire and now cannot. I have definately seen the change for the better. As long as we continue the mission, do not become over confident and do not decide to quit before we are done things will work out. It is amazing that when things were bad there were news crews every where. It is tough to find them now. There will continue to be horrific events just as there are in other places of the world. Please keep an objective mind when listening to any story from the media be it Iraq, Isreal, Darfar, etc... Any way God bless our troops and keep them in your prays throughout the holidays and everyday.
