Boston Herald "regrets" damage.

But Arlen "Love dem Eagles" Specter is still not happy.

I wouldn't go as far to say the story is wrong, yet.

Please elaborate? The Herald ran an uncorroborated story as fact when it was not. The only thing the Pats did wrong was what they were fined for, and Mr. Gadel (sp?) stated that fact in his press conference.

Quoting from today's Boston Herald ... bolding mine.

On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots video staff taped the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI. While the Boston Herald based its Feb. 2, 2008, report on sources that it believed to be credible, we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed.

Prior to the publication of its Feb. 2, 2008, article, the Boston Herald neither possessed nor viewed a tape of the Rams’ walkthrough before Super Bowl XXXVI, nor did we speak to anyone who had. We should not have published the allegation in the absence of firmer verification.

The Boston Herald regrets the damage done to the team by publication of the allegation, and sincerely apologizes to its readers and to the New England Patriots owners, players, employees and fans for our error.

What Mr. Goodell has been stating and what many people believed to be true prior to today's Herald apology were two different things.

Well, it means something. They won more games in a season than any other team in history. But yes, they lost when it counted most.

It does seem odd. In reality, the tabloid had been hoping against hope some evidence would surface to confirm what they'd reported. But when it never did, to their credit, they did some further digging and discovered the reason they couldn't verify it was that is was never true in the first place. Which they admitted today.

no, it means nothing, they didn't go undefeated, and furthermore, they lost the super bowl.

I would enjoy watching the Pats alot more if it wasn't for Belichick (I'm a Cowboys fan and please don't start arguing with me over this). The reason for me not liking Belichick is not just because he taped someone, I believe the Patriots exemplifies the definition of a team. However, Belichick also exemplifies the worst of the sportsman like conducts. The way he disrespects others, the way he acts after losses are not what a classy person does. I believe anyone should loose with grace and win with grace. Yes, obviously you will be dissapointed when you loose a huge game, but walking off the field with 1 second left? regardless of whether you shook the hand of the opponent coach says something about you as a person, it says somethin about how much you respect the game and its integrity, which is not much in the case of Belichick. Other than that I don't have much problem with the Patriots.

Yeah, that was kind of a big thing for me as well. He's a fantastic coach who gets the most of out his players and form a cohesive team. He can put in people who are supposedly out of their prime and get them to perform. He can get misfits of questionable character and get them to perform. He can get castoffs from crappy teams, and guess what? get them to perform. And to do this year in and year out is simply amazing. But leaving before the game is over is so disrespectful to your opponent.

This is Steve Czaban's take:

So “Spygate” is over, right?

Or not.

Arlen Specter wants a Mitchell Report sequel. That ain’t gonna happen. But it doesn’t make him wrong.

So the Patriots got the charge of taping the Rams walkthrough thrown out of court. Whoopee. The felony cheating charge stands.

While the Patriots PR department is busy writing indignant press releases protesting the smear applied by the Boston Herald prior to the Super Bowl, there are still many unanswered questions.

In fact, here’s one simple question: when will Matt Walsh hold a press conference where somebody other than Roger Goodell or Arlen Specter can ask him a question?

Never, I’m guessing.

The dirty secrets of Bill Belicheat’s spying skunkworks may die with the golf pro in Hawaii.

Here is the essence of what I think is important about “Spygate.”

These things we know…

1. Belichick’s spy program of videotaped signals began immediately upon arrival and continued up until the Patriots got caught last fall.

2. The program was extensive. It included tapes of signals and opponents that in many cases would not be seen again on the field for several years.

3. The ability of modern computer based programs to “sort” thousands of NFL plays on video, can magnify the benefit of stolen signals tremendously. You want every team’s defensive set on 3rd and 8 or longer, matched with the sideline signal? No problem. Click. Here’s your sorted video list. Enjoy.

4. Belichick claimed he “misunderstood” the rule, but at the same time gave Matt Walsh strict instructions “not to get caught.”

5. Belichick claims the stolen signals’ importance was a “1” out of “100” yet he directly flaunted a league rule to keep doing it. On the road, no less. Against a former protégé in Mangini who knew about the skunkworks. Not important? I don’t think so.

6. Roger Goodell did not send league security to confiscate the tapes and “materials” the Patriots amassed over 7 years. He let them turn in whatever they wanted, and took their word for it. He then destroyed that volunteered evidence and tried to wrap the whole thing up in 12 days. We are now at 250 days and counting. This does not inspire confidence with the public.

The analogy to think of here, is a card counter in Vegas who employs a cheat of some sort. Let’s say a guy is a great card counter, he can do some damage against the house if he’s lucky. Just like a great coach – and Belichick remains great, albeit tainted – can do some damage in the league with some luck.

But if a great coach, with the help of a trick, can get an even sharper edge. Belichick did. Imagine if the card counter had a guy with a small mirror, who could get the dealer’s hole card every 4th hand. Now that doesn’t seem much when taken alone, but with everything else thrown in, it can be run-the-table devastating.

And if a card cheat in Vegas gets caught with a buddy using a mirror, the casino doesn’t just say “we took the mirror, took the cheater’s stack of chips, and we destroyed the mirror.”

Oh no. They want to know: “What was your trick? How did you do it? Show us. Tell us.”

Roger Goodell has never made Belichick explain the trick. This is why suspicion lingers. And it will continue, until the public gets some decent answers, as to just how well the skunkworks helped the Patriots win games.

Meanwhile, I see that Tom Brady is now complaining about the coverage of “Spygate.” Oh really? How about next time, you can tell your coach: Stop cheating.

Vocal critics in rival football markets, like Steve Czaban (whom I've never heard but understand he's very good) are having a good time with us now, though I wish he'd stick to topics like how Scott Skiles will be able to live with an owner like Herb Kohl.

No one in New England is happy about any of this. Patriot's Nation is not in denial, though we'd admittedly all like to just ... you know, move on. (But if it had been Eric Mangini instead of Bill Belichick, we'd have been all over it like white cat hair on a black sweater.)

We know who Bill Belichick is, and we know he's not all warm and fuzzy like, say, Tony Dungy (another great coach, I hasten to add). But by any objective measurement, he's one of the best coaches in the history of the league, and he's ours. For now, anyway. We wish he hadn't done it, whatever "it" turns out to be, because it's taken away a lot of the enjoyment of having the best team ever assembled in the NFL.

The Pats cheated and were caught. It's time to move on. As for Senator Specter he needs to worry about the real problams facing this country and not a game. If you want to investigate a way a company is running its business start with the oil companies not the NFL.

It also means only one team still remains undefeated in a season the Miami Dolphins.
They will continue to have there gala celibration each and every year they are on this earth.
Meanwhile the Pats winning the most games is pale by comparison don't you think..
Especially with spy gate and already making the biggest chokers of all time list

As they deserve to. But I don't think there are a lot of objective football observers who think that team was better than the 2007 Patriots, the '85 Bears, the Steelers of the late '70s, the Cowboys of the early 90s, or for that matter, in an earlier generation, the Packers of the early 60s.
