The weather is turning crisp and cool which is my favorite weather to enjoy a pipe. Pipes just seem to be better suited for fall and winter than a cigar. Perhaps it's because non-cigar lovers will tolerate pipe smoke more redily when the weather turns cold driving cigar smokers inside.

Since there seem to be a handful of us who enjoy tobacco in both of it's highest forms, I've taken it upon myself to creat this post. While my cigar experience is pretty extensive, I've only been smoking a pipe for two years. I welcome input from all in this endeavor.

I'm not going to organize this in any formal manner, as there are plenty of sites dedicated to pipe smoking. Also, in the tradition of S.N.O.B. and B.A.S.E. we will have a C.L.A.S.P; Cigar Lovers who Also Smoke Pipes.

As is tradition I dub myself C.L.A.S.P. #0001!

Let the questions and ponderings begin!

Like you I too have been delving into the art of pipe smoking for about a year or so. I agree about the cooler months bringing on the most ideal times to enjoy a warm bowl of your favorite blend. If you haven't already, try some of CAOs tobacco, namely, Old Ironsides. It's a great Latakia (sp?) that's a bit hard to light, but once it gets started, it's well worth the hassle. To me, there's no better time to smoke a pipe than while sitting down in a comfy chair with a great book. The two go hand in hand with each other. I recommend it if you've never combined the two hobbies.
If I could make a modification, or rather a supplimental request for this thread, it would be for you to list your favorite pipe that you currently own. Like Cigars, I feel that if you haven't smoked something out of a specific shape or size pipe, you haven't experienced all the fascets (sp?) of how it can taste.
I love my Savinelli stubby. I'm not sure if it actually has a specific name, but it's about 6" long with a moderately large bowl and a rather thick stem. It's deep cherry in color and is seasoned rather perfectly IMHO! Glad to be able to discuss this topic here.
I herebye notify all that I would care to also be known as C.L.A.S.P.#0002

I too collect and smoke Pipes on occasion. My favorite pipe is one that I had made for me in the Ukraine. My Grandfather and his parents imigrated from the Ukraine when he was 2 years old so this could by why I love this pipe so much. The stem is 12 inches long and beautifully hand carved the bend of the stem is about 2 inches from the top. The Bowl's exterior dimensions are 2 inches high by 1 1/2 around, the interior is about a cubic inch which allows for about 45 minutes worth of a smoke.

BinDer I'd like to submit my name to be recognized as C.L.A.S.P #0003

Yeah I knew Stogie would jump on CLASP #0000. You see he's a big zero himself. Wink

As for pipes and tobacco. I have a few briars, a meerschaum and a corncob. I prefer freehand briar pipes, mostly Danish or a few American designs. I will probably add another this month when the pipe smoking bug bites hard.

Tobacco selection usually finds me smoking an English blend. I like Latakia, Oriental and unsweetened/unflavored Cavendish in my blends. I find that English blends deliver the rich smokey and leathery tastes that cigars lack.

Pipe tobacco is much more complex and intriguing than cigar tobacco. This is because of the wide varieties of nations and types contributing to the blends. Also, pipe tobacco is pressed, steamed, smoked, dried and blended to get pure flavor. Cigar tobaccos have to remain somewhat intact with the ability to literally hold themselves together so they can only be processed so much to release their flavor.

I love cigars though, you need much fewer geegaws and doodads to smoke a cigar. With a pipe you need a tamp, a pick, the pipe itself, a pouch of tobacco, someplace to rest the pipe, some pipe cleaners, etc.

Cigars will always be my strongest passion but every now and then I'll cheat on "lady cigar" with "mistress pipe."

Picked up smoking a pipe from a roomate in college. Very relaxing during the cold months...especially when reading large books.

I still consider myself a NOOB so binder please don't beat on me to bad.

Can I become C.L.A.S.P #4 ?

I began smoking cigars off and on back in 2002 and have remained this way for quite sometime. And about mid August I began smoking a pipe because I kept seeing a shipmate of mine smoking his corncob. So I went out got a corncob and some tobacco since then I've bought some estate pipes which were new but left in an empty wearhouse. It easier to smoke a pipe at work for me then cigars. So I normally smoke my pipe there and I'll have a cigar after a ruff day. So now I've got about 30oz of different tobacco virginia/english blends, house blends, aromatic blends. So far I've enjoyed the aromatic blends but I've got some new english blends I can't wait to try out while setting around the camp fire. Also while I'm home I have plans of getting a desent briar pipe to start smoking.

And I was begining to think there wasn't many people who smoked cigars and pipes. Binder have you ever tried smokein what's left of a cigar inside your pipe?

I smoked a pipe years ago but stopped when I started with cigars. I think i will dust off one of the old pipe and go shopping for something exotic and fire it up.

I am also a cigar lover who smokes a pipe. My first love will always be cigars but when autumn rolls around here in the Rocky Mountains I just can't help but get the hankering for a pipe. Something about cooler weather and the beautiful fall colors just seems to fit with a pipe. My favorite pipe is a full bent Barling that I have had for several years. There are several tobaccos that I enjoy but I have been considering purchasing a tin of McClellands Dominican Glory or Dominican Glory Maduro. I understand that these tobaccos have cigar tobacco as part of the blend. Has anyone tried either of these tobaccos. I wonder if it would be a good way to enjoy the best of both worlds?

I do enjoy smoking a pipe - quicker than a cigar, its a little cheaper, and its just a fun way to relax.

Been smoking pipes since college days (1970). Favorite tobaccos are balkan sobranie (now saseini) and MacBarren's plumcake. Favorite pipe is a Ben Wade freehand.

Been smoking a pipe for about 8 years now and own about 45-50 of them.

As far as tobacco, it's english blends and non flavored virginias for me. Old Ironsides being one of my favorites ( it lights easy if you rub it out first).

Yes the cold weather seems to match great with a pipe.

We seem to be off to a good start! Any one else who wants in, please note that C.L.A.S.P. #'s are assigned in order of request. I've edited the original post to include the roster, just check that someone hasn't already requested the next number in the thread.

Well for pipes...

I have a nice Bjarne Freehand setter that sees the most action. Like most Danish pipes it has a tall narrow bowl bore, so it can be a bit tricky to pack, but once you get it lit it burns evenly. Also the thick walls make it nice to hold and the flat bottom makes it practical as you can set it anywhere.

My next favorite pipe is my Meerschaum. It's a nice one, not too expensive with only a small plastered flaw. It is covered in a birdseye lattice, that looks really neat as it's aging.

Many Meerschaums will contain a pit or flaw that is filled with a Meerschaum/Plaster compound. These flaws are usually small and hidden somewhere in the design or on the bottom. They usually become evident as the pipe begins to patina into that lovely dark ivory to golden color. The plastered area doesn't always age the same.

I recommend corncobs for people who want to give pipe smoking a try and don't want to invest too much. They are a cheap and easy way to get started and I still use corncobs to try out new blends. You don't want to stick a new blend in your favorite pipe and then find out that it and your pipe now taste like crap.

I also recommend that new pipe smokers try smoking at least a dozen bowls of tobacco before deciding if they like it. I know in the beginning I was disappointed because I'd have to light the damn thing a dozen times or I couldn't get it to light at all beacuse I packed the bowl to tight, etc.

Unlike cigars, pipesmoking takes a bit of skill to get it right. If you get a plugged cigar, you are screwed. If you pack a pipe too tight however, simply knock the tobacco out and repack! You can also control more of the variables when pipesmoking as opposed to cigars. You can pack the bowl tighter, looser, blend your own tobacco, etc.

Someone above mentioned buying blends that contain cigar tobacco, as sort of the "Best of Both Worlds." None of the blends containing cigar leaf I have smoked have been that good. I even took a PAM that split while travelling and chopped it up and blended it with pipe tobacco. While it was OK, it wasn't the best of both worlds. Pipes are pipes and cigars are cigars. The two don't really blend well.

I've been smoking a pipe for about 2 years now, is that worthy enough to be part of C.L.A.S.P?

I've been smoking a Meerschaum for about 4 years and really enjoy it. Unfortunately, I misplaced my pipe in a recent move and haven't had a chance to smoke it in a while. I'd like to start again now that cooler temperatures are now approaching (I say cooler because Southern California never gets cold) and figure now would be a good time to add a briar pipe (at least until I can find my Meerschuam). Anyone have any opinions on Jeantet pipes. They are cheap and look nice, so I thought I'd start there.

I enjoy smoking pipes as well. Does it count if they don't ever contain tobacco?
