Anyone tried these? Every month I am drawn to these cheapies in the CI catalog, but never gotten any. They are 50 for 39.95 in the Churchill size. If they are halfway decent, it wouldnt be a bad buy.

A review would be great if anyone has tried them.. Here is the description in the catalog (so don't blame me for the punctuation):

"Inexpensive, handmade, and built for daily enjoyment, these chunky mazos are packed to the gills with value, featuring smooth, Connecticut seed wrappers and a sandwich blend of quality Nicaraguan tobaccos. Consistently enjoyable!"

...and you can also get 50 of the Fuma size (6.5" x 44) for $29.95.

No, never tried them.

I have never smoked this particular cigar, but CI has a way of making cheap cigars sound like they are going to be CC's. When I first started to get serious about cigars I bit on one of these cheap deals and bought a bundle of 25(El Mejor Espresso). Although the cigar isn't terrible, I wish I didn't buy so many. I guess you have to ask yourself, even though they are cheap, do you really want 50 of these things laying around if they suck? I guess you could always hand them out to buddies or something.

i really wouldnt go after these cigars, you can get a lot of good stuff in the 2 dollar range so for about the same price you can get 20 good smokes instead of 50 average at best ones

What would you suggest? I would like to have a chep "backup" smoke around for when I am just kinda in the mood, or have had multiple that day.. Also something to hand to noob buddies to try cigars, etc. The one that I keep around now for that is the AF Curlyhead deluxe..

Flor de Oliva are not bad smokes. They are products of the Oliva family, so you know they are well made. If I have mulitple cigars in a day I always try to mix in one of these so I'm not dropping a ton of money in one day. You can probably pick them up for a dollar a piece or less on CBid. They are fairly mild so they make an excellent hand out cigar.

???

He's talking about cigars that are $0.80 each, not $2.00.

Lots of people rave about Famous Nicaraguan 3000 from www.famous-smoke.com and they'rew under $50 per bundle

Consuegra from www.jrcigar.com are seconds of Punch, Hoyo, El Rey and some other stuff. Runs from $20-$40 per bundle. Good if you like those brands.

Remember that there are lots of "first quality" brands that you can get very cheaply -- around $60 a box by mail order:

> Saint Luis Rey (CA just rated the No. 5 petit corona a 92 -- they're around $57 a box at discount)
> Gispert
> Occidental Reserve/OR Double Broadleaf
> Oliva Serie G

Hell, even Chateau Fuente and 858s are only around $3 per stick. I'd make the stretch.

Any of that closeout stuff from CI is going to be acrid crap.

Here's my final suggestion:

Don't smoke crap.

Smoke fewer cigars, but smoke better cigars.

This is great advice E-cord. Why smoke a bunch of cigars that you aren't really excited to smoke. I'd rather take my time and focus on a quality cigar that I know I will enjoy.

I just have 2 mindsets when it comes to cigars. The first is the most common:
I am alone, and very relaxed. Usually sitting outside, reading a book. I've got ethier a good bourbon, or a coke. I am very focused on the flavors of the cigar. This is my "top-shelf" cigar time.

The Second mindset:
I am in a bar or my garage with a bunch of buddies. We are drinking beer and all smoking cigars. Having fun, getting a bit drunk, laughing our a$$es off.. At this point, I dont need to be smoking a $20 cigar. I just need somethign that lets me smoke, doesnt taste bad, and won't go out. This is when I pull out a Curlyhead deluxe, a Pirate's Gold or a Fonseca.

I always keep a box of Punch Rothschilds for times I must be outside, or to handout. Not a refined cigar, but long filler and hand made for little over $100/box of 50 most places.

Yea, skimming posts instead of reading them is actually the cool new trend on the internet, who reads anymore. I said "so for about the same price," meaning 50 bucks, he could get 20 good smokes instead of 50 average at best ones.

RP vintage seconds run about 3 a bundle on CI, Edge seconds are about 3.5 there too, MAXX seconds are 2.5 as well, RP factory selects are 2ish, Sancho Panza Double maduro La mancha got a 91 rating not to long ago and they run about 50 a box. Keep an eye on the deals on CI and famous too, i saw DPG blue labes go off for like 3-4 a stick so there are plenty of good smokes you dont have to break the bank for.

EDIT indian tabacs are around 2 almost everywhere also

I agree with the Chataeu Fuente line.

I always have atleast a box of Chataeu Fuente(sg)or(nat)and a box of Double Chataeu Fuente (SG)for everyday, morning cigar,or hand out sticks to some of my freinds who smoke but not on a regular basis.

Flor de Oliva - any
Quorum
JR - natural
Fuente curly head maduro

those are my go to $2 smokes; as far as sub $2, I bought a 20 cigar bundle of Value Line Dominican corons (#300?) from Cigar Auctioneer that was passable for an $.80 smoke
