The feeling of excitement I get from a play is often determined by how important it is to the outcome of the game. A big sack can be awesome if it's on an important thrid down play, or an interception when your team needs a turnover.
I would say that THE most exciting play in football is a punt return for TD. Punts are generally a boring event. But when a guy breaks one, it can be a thing to behold. Especially when it looks like the returner is about to get hammered by a coverage guy only to evade him with a quick first step. After that first step, anything goes. Punt returns for TDs are rare, too, which adds to the excitement when it happens.
Just my opinion . . .

A single play...a kick return is exciting, but I prefer the broken pass/scramble/pass/run with a few downfield blocks for a big gain. Its just wild. Best thing is a great drive at a key moment of the game...can see lots of clutch plays with lots of tension for like 7-8 minutes. That's what makes football great. But I won't argue with a TD punt return for excitement.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Ok, so the kick return is the most exciting play, especially at a crucial moment. I must admit though that I really enjoy watching a great running back play. I am, or was, a huge Barry Sanders fan. I also enjoy watching the smash mouth running of backs like Jamal and The Bus.
A Barry Sanders type run. Nothing better than seeing a RB stopped then all of a sudden he's going left to right and breaking ankles all over the field.

Certain individual players can make anything exciting, I will give you that. Barry Sanders had some of most amazing two yard runs I have ever seen.
But you seldom see a punt return for TD that doesn't include either some awesome jukes or one or two crushing blocks.
Third down sacks are awesome, especially late in a close game. I also love it when your team is on defense and the opposing team is in the red zone and a defensive back picks a pass in the end zone. You're sitting there hoping that you can hold them to a field goal and all of sudden you're back on offense at the 20.

Speaking of punt returns, anyone remember Johnny Rogers from Nebraska returning the punt for a TD in the game against Oklahoma? November 1971 if I remember correctly. Whenever that game is on ESPN classic I'll sit there and watch it. One thing that is fun about watching old games on ESPN are the TV graphics. And yes, Barry Sanders was simply amazing. The other one who was fun to watch was "Sweetness", may God rest his soul.

OK, speaking of punt returns, anyone watch the Lions game this weekend? Drummond is awesome! He ran two punt returns back for a touchdown. And here's where it really turns great. He ran them BOTH back in the FOURTH quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime. The second runback was with under a minute left. Of course they lost, but they always find a way to lose.
The Lions are my favorite team, but the line sucks and Princess sucks!
Me and my dad were watching the game, and we agreed the only way we were going to win that game in overtime was if we somehow ran back an interception or another punt return because man out offense was horrible that day.
I dont know what Harrington's problem was that game but it was ugly.

Im with Idesign! Nothing better than watching a running back juke, slash or simply run over a player on a spectacular run. Barry was the man, I remeber a game against the bears, there were like 6-7 men on him. It looked like a dog pyle and you couldnt see any blue or silver. Then all of a sudden you see barry some how shooot out of it and go for a td! The other offensive play that just gets me all excited is a Flea Flicker. Nothing like seeing a Flea Flicker thrown for a TD! Its pure heartbreak.

What did you guys think of McNabb's 14 second play last night. I was crackin up, I figured Mitchell would drop the catch after all of that. Exciting? Mildly.....I would say it leans more towards amusing.
I'm old school, I guess. My favorite play was Larry Csonka up the middle, running over people. I love a solid, smashmouth running game. I love 7-3 games ... D-FENSE!
P.S. Oh yeah, I'm a Steelers fan, you betcha!

I agree with you Idesign, it was extremely funny. but actually the Dallas D should be ashamed. But hey, at least it wasn't someone slow back there running around like Bledsoe... that would have been truly pathetic!
