3.0 GHz processors! Just upgraded from a 2.4 w/o Hyper-threading, etc. for a 3.0e (hyper-threading, big cache, 800 MHz front-side bus, hyper-trasport) This also allows me to run Dual-Channel memory on the board, so I'm running a Gig of DDR3200 @ 2.0,2,2,5. Bought an SATA harddrive to throw in the mix too. All in all its pretty con'sarn quick and saved the latest 'System of a Down' (which I purchased) album to my computer in just under 10 minutes (used to take 20is). Coooool...
Thats pretty good. I can do it in less time with my OC'd 2.4 though. I don't know why but for some reason this last computer I built is smokin fast. How is that SATA? Do you have a raid controller for it? Do they even make raid controllers for SATA? I am sure they do. I have a gig of no-name PC3200. It is great.

I'm quite the audio freak, so 10 mins is in --aps upto 320kbps with Lame. Fairly quick considering its the clearest way to encode an mp3.
So far the SATA drive (which is a Seagate 120gig, 8 mb cache @ 7200 rpm, I have an identical drive in IDE) isn't any faster than the IDE; on the plus side its no slower, is uses a much smaller cable (woo for air flow), and it has about half the total power consumption of its IDE twin. The mobo I'm currently using does support RAID with SATA (this guy: http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4p800-e_d/overview.htm). I used to run two Western Digitals in IDE RAID with mirroring and striping, and in most situations, it wasn't any faster than having a single drive hooked up. It was blazingly fast at loading maps for various games. Given the cost and that being the only noticable benefit, I didn't feel like laying out the bucks for two SATA drives.
Havn't tried over-clocking this new CPU yet. The old 2.4B was able to hit 2.8 stable and it would post at 3.0 but not load Windows. The only thing clocked up at the moment is the graphics card, which is at 430 core/850 ram, from 300/700. The next purchase (a while down the road ) will be a dual-layer dvd burner, and a new sound card.
Speaking of the Mac's, we just got a MacMini in at work yesterday, running Tiger. Amazingly small and surprisingly heavy; it runs somewhere around 1 ghz, pretty cool little computer.
I had my vid card OC'd for a while. I didn't really notice much of a difference though so I switched it back. I think its around 250/500 and can be OC'd up to 300/700. I was looking at the new nvidia 6600GT made by albatron. Their cards are always faster for some reason.(albatron not necessarily nvidia) I have read reviews that say it can go 500/1100 stable. Now I just have to get a mobo with pci express slot. Supposed to be one bada$$ card. Newegg has it for less than 200 bucks right now. I'm on that when I get some extra bling.

I'm picking up Tiger today, can't wait, I've heard good things about it.

Be careful to wear enough protective gear so the tiger doesn't eat you or any body parts!

Pmp- I have an MSI Neo 4 Platinum. It's a pretty nice board, but it's for Athlon 64. I wish I had bought a nicer PCI-E card, b/c I have a craptacular GeForce 6200

Or we can tell them how we're still so impressed by these newfangled gadgets like microwave ovens, fax machines, CD players, and e-mail. Not to mention desktop computers and the existence of the technology that enables this site to exist.

Hey nerds, check out my rig in my pics below and try not to drool on my dual vid cards. Can you say "HalfLife2 at 100+ frames/sec high quality settings?"
