According to the news the Mexican Congress passes a law allowing a small amount of marijuana, cocaine, and hallucinagens to be legal if found on a person. Wow.

Better a freedom-biassed law that is strictly enforced than a repression-biassed law that is loosely enforced.

In the end it does not matter.

It is a tough issue. However, it's interesting to read what conservatives like William F. Buckley, Jr. as well as George Schultz have written about the U.S. "war on drugs". This "war" costs billions & billioins and ends up making criminals out of otherwise totally law abiding American citizens. It is totally absurd.

At least Mexico is "trying" to change a law to conform to reality.

The logic behind the decision isn't half bad. The idea being that legal authorities can spend time and resources tracking down and breaking up distribution networks instead of arresting the teenage kid with a dime bag.

That said, I don't really agree with the premise, because it legitimizes the user, and there is no way to bring the drug trade to a complete halt. However, if you can elimite a large portion of the networks, you can then return to focusing on the users at a later time.

It will be interesting to see if it works. By in large I do think it will have a positive effect on drug trafficing in the US.

Not surprising as they allow the sale of schedule II narcotics, steroids and various other nasties.
