Having Laura Bush say this is so cowardly. And she is doing it because of Bush's awful response to Katrina:

U.S. first lady Laura Bush, who has a long-standing interest in Myanmar, urged the government to allow the team into the country, saying she expected Washington would provide "substantial" aid if it could conduct its own assessment of the situation on the ground.

And she blasted the junta, saying the lack of warning before a deadly cyclone hit on Friday was the latest example of "the junta's failure to meet its people's basic needs."

You read the rest of the article here.

Seems that our government has some experience not meeting peoples' "basic needs" in a time of crisis.

I heard her speech today and it morphed into a political rant instead of galvanizing support from other countries in their time of pain. I know their country is ruled by tryants at this time but I thought the speech would center around the people instead of her agenda.

It's embarrassing to see Laura Bush criticizing the emergency response of another country...

Something about a pot and a kettle comes to mind...

Yeah, since FEMA stumbled in New Orleans, how dare anyone in the US ever again urge a foreign government to allow us to help them during a crisis!.

Good grief.

Although I tend to like Laura Bush as a first lady, I rate the importance of her speeches and opinions about politics - especially foreign affairs - just above well known actors/actresses/musicians.

kmd00 - Despite the gov'ts NOLA debacle, the U.S. Navy can be very helpful when providing carriers to disaster sites...

The POTUS needed to give this speech and talk about how even though he has not always done the best job, the US would like the opportunity to help. Sending Laura out there is weak.

This administration did a GREAT job with Katrina and the Tsunami. The low-lifes criticizing bush for his handling of these disasters are the type of people who you can never do enough for to satisfy their bleeding hearts. They have not handled Iraq all that well but much better than most people would have you believe. I don't blame Bush personally for Iraq as I know it would have been handled much worse by:

Clinton (both of them)
Gore
Kerry
Obama
Carter
Ford
Johnson
Nixon
Lincoln
and many others.

I agree that GWB should be the one making a speech about this recent tragedy and if he hasn't already, then I am surprised (i haven't seen one but assume that he hasn't after the previous post). However, the situation over there sucks and you couldn't pick a more difficult place to try and send aid I don't think.

Agreed here - the Navy and Marines are our best first-responders in these situations.

I also agree that Bush should have been the one to make the speech. It would have been a great opportunity to talk about lessons-learned from the Katrina debacle, and how that experience will help us to provide better responses in the future.

There is plenty of blame to go around vis-a-vis Katrina - from local to state to national levels. I'd have been equally irritated had the Mayor of New Orleans or the Governors of Louisiana and Mississippi made the same speech.

Since it obviously isn't clear, let me say my post was "tic". Plainly put, I think the original post is ridiculous.

Let the emerging powerhouses of India and China underwrite the aid. It's their backyard.
They probably produce most of the tar paper and corrugated galvanized steel anyway.

There are more pressing issues in politics than hypocrisy. Like sheer stupidity and corruption, for example.

I had to read that a couple of times to determine if you were just being ironic or facetious. If you weren't, I think you'd have a difficult time finding a single other person in the country who'd agree with you, including anyone in the administration. Our government's response to Katrina is the single biggest shame of this President's 7 1/2 years, and one of the biggest debacles in our history.

By the way, did you actually favorably compare the war conduct of George W. Bush and Abraham Lincoln in your post??

I agree with this to an extent, but there is only so much that they would do. We need to be involved also.

Katrina and New Orleans. U r seeing the future.

I think insurance companies and the army corps of engineers are waxing philosophical about the Mississippi delta and all that eroding, sinking, below sea level land that is becoming more flood prone with rising sea levels in a hrricane zone.

You poor sole. Ignorance is bliss though huh? You are one out of maybe 8 people left in this country who haven't figured out what is going on. How embarrassing for you.

How is she not right?

"The people’s plight is not helped by the disposition of their Government. Running the country on a combination of internal repression and xenophobia, the junta seems not to have made up its mind that this is a tragedy that it cannot remedy on its own.

It certainly was not too concerned when the cyclone approached the Burmase coast. A spokesman for the Indian Meteorological Department revealed yesterday that it had given Burma two days’ warning of Cyclone Nargis. “Forty-eight hours before Nargis struck, we indicated its point of crossing \, its severity and all related issues to Burmese agencies,” he said. Weather systems in the Bay of Bengal are tracked by India by satellite."
