I was in Florida last week and took a couple of pretty good cigars to the golf course to puff on as I tore up the grass, frightened nearby wildlife and threatend the safety of anyone not standing immediately behind me. I almost always use a punch, preferring that to a flat or v cut. Unfortunately, I forgot my punch and had no way to open the cigar caps other than the old fashioned way - bite them off. That method, however, rarely produces a satisfactory result and leaves tobacco stck between my teeth. So, I looked round for something else to use and was struck by the fact that the hole in the ground made by a golf tee is not unlike the hole in a cigar made by a punch. So, what the hell? I took a sharp-tipped tee and gently worked it into the middle of the cap of a nice fat 6 x 54 stogie about a quarter inch deep. I took a few tentative test draws and found that I had no problem getting a consistent, fairly easy flow of air. I fired up the cigar and, to my delight, discovered that the cigar drew easily and burned evenly. I tried this method again on a second, smaller and less expensive cigar on the back nine with the same result. So, now I seem to have discovered a virtually free, reliable and fun alternative to the traditional punch. Please feel free to try the new "Tee Punch" method and let me know your results.

Nice work nixdad, I will certainly remember this for when it gets warm enough here in the northeast for me to again enjoy the outdoors by venturing out to strike a bunch of round objects 100 and some odd times. My conscience bemoans that the amount of grass I displace may be enough to have a measurable effect on global warming (sorry Al). I don't think all those balls I LOOSE will be decomposing anytime soon either. Now if only someone could think of a way that a cigar or related tool can be used to improve one's golf game. Maybe we should ask extensioncord if the CAO Vision could help with this.

My Dad loves this method he has a "TEE" around just in case he smokes a cigar. I got him a center punch he would rather have the "TEE" go figure Razz

Another tip for you guys when your in a bind, dis-assemble a cheap plastic ink pen and use the shaft and gently get a nice punch hole doing that. That one has saved me from biting off the end more than a few times.

Nixdad,

Excellent tip, I have been in that situation a couple times on the back nine. That is a great bit of info that I am sure will come in very handy in the future.

My best improv punch was a spent .762 case.
