I haven't noticed any effects the toothy wrappers had on the taste. For me, it is only something that is aesthetically pleasing when the wrapper burns. I just assumed that a toothy wrapper generally indicates a higher quality wrapper which leads to better taste.
"Toothy," as opposed to "toothsome," which means tasty, or flavorful, refers to a leaf that is more coarse in texture; often used when referring to Maduro and Cameroon wrappers, which are naturally "toothier."
