ammodog try rotating the cigar in your mouth slowly as you light it. Once lit, blow on the flame and see what part is still black and slowly try it again in the area that is unlit. When the flame is like a red cherry then you will have the best chance of an even burn. Sometimes due to humidification reasons corrections are needed, but all in all that should get you started. Enjoy that smoke!

Another thing that I've started doing more, is lighting the cigar without even drawing on it. Rotate it in your hand with the flame not quite touching it. It takes a while, but I have had some of the best lit cigars (and most even burns) since I started this technique.
Trying to light a cigar with matches is difficult, and you usually have to draw constantly to make the flame have any impact. However, when you are using a lighter, toast the end without putting the cigar in your mouth at all.

PS- Check out the videos, I believe they are seen toasting some gars in one or two of them. You can also check out the 101 to see a full walk-through.

I understand you don't have a butane yet, but don't use those bic lighters. Just get some matches, they work fine as long as there isn't much wind, and the cigar should taste better.
I agree with the others about toasting the foot before putting it to your mouth. Toast well, then light, it is a much quicker process once in your mouth.
I just like cigars, is that ok?
