Chaps,

just noticed something when i was outside burning my Monte #2 just now.

There was a little Green Dot on my Cigar. i realize this may be mold. But how? what is it? is this normal? i would appreciate some input as to what may have caused this.

i did the following:

i have used ONLY distilled water
i am currently using humi-beads
my hygrometer has been calibrated properly
it has hovered between %70 & %72 RH
Temp in the house fluctuates between %70 & %74 degrees.

thanks in advance fellers.

-FS

Was it green and fuzzy or just a green mark on the wrapper?

Fuzzy = mold (bad)

Green mark = blemish (not bad)

I believe this is simply a sun spot, but I could be mistaken.

Nothing wrong with that. I've seen green blemishes on many CCs. Doesn't affect the cigar in any way.

Fedor, I agree with everyone else, nothing to worry about.

I've had green paint-like blemishes on my cigar and band before for some singles. It did not affect the taste.

My understanding is that it's caused by a drop of water on the leaf acting like a magnifying glass. Sun shining through the drop creates a small burnt spot on the leaf. This doesn't affect the way the leaf smokes or tastes - just a cosmetic issue.

Can one of the Masters confirm this?

That is a very interesting explanation CP. All it takes is a drop of water, hmm, I would have never thought that was the culprit. Maybe I will hold my cigars with spots in higher regard now.

Definetly a sun spot.

This was a tip of the week from cigar aficionado:

Plume is simply the product of a cigar's oils that have oozed and dried over time. It's harmless. Excess humidity along with high temperatures will lead to mold, which may damage your cigars. The two byproducts are similar in appearance but inherently different in action.

An easy way to tell plume from mold is to use your finger to remove some of the fuzz from the cigar: mold will smudge and leave a stain on your cigar's wrapper; plume will brush off easily, like powder, and leave no stain. If you know it's plume, you don't have to remove it until you're ready to smoke your cigar.

to study how mold looks on cigar wrappers. I had a piece of left over cigar and placed into a tupperware. Over humidified it. After a week i got white fuzzy mold. Its a good way to identify. And a fun science project. lol.
