The NCAA is only the latest to take Political Correctness to far in trying to force schools to not use Native American names and as mascots. This is stupid. Does the NCAA have anything better to do than to get involved in what a school chooses to use ans a mascot. I am Irish mostly but have some Native American blood in me and I am not offended by the "Fighting Irish" nor am I offended by the FSU Seminoles. WHO CARES!!!! This is just another case of political correctness gone way to far.

I agree. I'm a graduate of the University of Illinois where the symbol (the word mascot is not used there) is the Illini. The personification of this is Chief Illiniwek. While he is present at football and bball games, he only appears at half time with the band and does a traditional dance (stylized, but with authentic elements from the Sioux nation in South Dakota) that has remained the same since around 1926. It's my understanding that the remaining members of the Illini tribe support U of I's use of the name.

If these names are going to be banned in the name of being PC, then the state of Illinois should change it's name. Illinois is a French word that means "land of the Illini". Additionally, all states that are based in any Indian language or heritage should be renamed. I can think of a few off the top of my head such as Arkansas, Illionis, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and other place names should be changed such as Miami, Osceola, Oklahoma ("land of the red people"). This PC crap is going to far, and will eventually kill us..but that's another discussion..

And add Alabama and several of our cities and rivers to the ban list.

I remember a few years ago a ban on the Confederate Flag at the Southern Mississippi University Rebels games.

I also remember some Native American groups getting fired up about the "tommahawk chop" at the Atlanta Braves Baseball games. Roll Eyes

I too am an Illinois grad. I'm actually ashamed that the University hasn't stood up for Chief Illinweck the way Florida State has stood up for their symbols.

I can ALMOST understand the NCAA's stance it if a derogitory term is used (say "redskins"), but when it is based in historical fact, supported by the group being used as a symbol, and treated with the utmost respect, I really don't see where the NCAA gets of making rules about it.

Hey, Raven, not for nuthin', but when some high schools in Georgia and South Carolina banned students from wearing t-shirts decorated with the Confederate flag, it was the ACLU that went to court on their behalf to overturn the ban.

They've been pretty active in fighting the PC police on college campuses, too.
