I really liked Ruger’s Idea of a Chess Thread where two board members can play a game of chess by posting their moves. A high tech version of postcard chess. I know there are some Chess players who post here so I am hoping this idea will work well and take off. This tread is the Official Rules and Challenge Thread. If someone would like to start a chess game they would post a challenge in this thread. Something simple like
“Who wants to play chess?” The first person to post a response, for example,
“I want to play chess” would be the opponent. The Challenger (the person who asked the question) would then start a new thread title “Chess – Plyr1 v. Plyr2 – Start Date” where plyr1 is the Challenger’s screen name and plyr2 is the Opponent’s screen name. An example would be:
“Chess – Lorax429 v. Ruger – 10/13/05”
This new thread is where the players will post their moves. Others could follow along on their own Chess boards if they were interested in observing the match. The Challenger will be black, and the opponent who answered the challenge will be white and move first. The board layout is as follows:
Thinking of the board in a North/South position, White will be on the south end of the board (bottom), and black on the north (top). Moving left to right the columns will be “A thru H”. Rows will be numbered from South to North (bottom to top) “1 thru 8” with White setup in rows 1& 2 and Black setup in 7&8.

Move notations:
P = Pawn
R = Rook
N = Knight
B = Bishop
Q = Queen
K = King
O-O = Castle Short Side
O-O-O = Castle Long Side
Append a “+” for a Check and “++” for Check Mate
Pawn promotion is noted with an =. Example Ph8=Q is a pawn moving from h7 to h8 and is promoted to a queen.
En Passant append an “ep” and use the arrival square of the attacking pawn in the notation. An explanation of the En Passant rule can be found
here .
Example: “Pd4xe3ep” the pawn in square d4 captures the pawn in e4 while moving to e3.
Example of a White move:
Nf3 (the white knight in square g1 moves to square f3)
If you are attacking an opponent’s piece include an “x” in the move notation
Example of an attack:
Nxg5 (knight at square f3 takes the piece at square g5).
I hope this is simple enough to work out. The main thing is that each move is clear to the players, so if the notation is goofed a bit it’s no big deal as long as both players are clear on the move. If anyone has any suggestions to improve this setup, post them here and I can modify this original post to reflect any changes that we decide to adopt. The rules in this post are the official rules. All rule changes will be reflected in this post.
Have fun and good luck.
