I live in Florida, any tips on keeping the temp down in in my humidor? I try and keep it near a vent, but still, it was 90 outside today!

You need to keep your cigars in a wine cooler.

doc is very right. i live in FL as well (PBG) and with our summers (and parts of the winter) a wine cooler is the only way to go.

I live in Texas, and haven't plunked down the money for a wine cooler yet (soon), but I usually try to keep my humidor on the floor, out of direct sunlight, in the direct path of the AC vent (unless I have reason not to - like company coming over or something). So, you might at least try that.

you have 3 simple choices for cooling your humis... (I go through tis religiously every year)

1) place your cigars in a wine cooler converted into a humi.

2) buy a cooled humi-cabinet such as an Aristocrat or an Avallo

3) install a separate AC in a room in your house, keep it under 68F, and put your humis in that room….

I did #3 for over 10 years.. this year, I’ve had enough, and decided to go the way of #1, and bought 4 wine coolers that I’m presently converting into humis.

salibas, that sounds like a lot of fun!

I have an Emerson 8 bottle that I was hoping my TampaHumidor Chelsea would fit in, but it doesn't. It goes all the way down to 45% RH when it kicks in. Yikes. So I don't think I'm going to even attempt a conversion. I think I'm going to rig some AC vent contraption for the summer, maybe involving some metal plates or something. I just can't justify buying a bigger wine cooler.

That's what I do too. I am in South Florida - The Sub Tropics, and under the vent, on the floor away from a window, they stay at 72 degrees.

Showing my ignorance, as long as you keep your RH below 75%, is there that big a difference between 72 and 68 degrees? I keep my humi in a room with no direct sunlight and a pretty steady 72 degrees, without any issues (so far).

72 degrees is fine. As long as the humidity doesn't spike.
Mine are at 72 degrees and 69 % RH
But 75% is too high.

You know.. it all depends on what you're trying to humidify..

If you’re storing let’s say 40, 50, or even 100 cigars that you know you will smoke over the next few weeks or months, then no, there isn’t really a big difference between 68F and 72F…

but for the ones who have a large inventory that they plan on holding for many years, then yes, there’s a huge difference between 68F and 72F.. in fact, you should aim to keep it even lower than 68…

You can also get a thermoelectric cooling unit and install it in your humidor, if it's big enough. You can get some pretty small units, but you usually install them with the hot side on the outside of the unit so's the cool side stays inside. Put a small fan blowing on the element and you can cool a decent sized humi that way. I think some of the larger humis use these as well.

Cigar beetles will hatch out at temperatures over 70 degrees. If there are eggs in your cigars they will start to hatch and ruin your smokes.

I live in the sub tropics... South Florida, where it is 85+ everyday and in the winter it is 65- 75 everyday. Ihave not had the Beatles here ever. I have invited them, have posters and albums, but have never seen them here. My Humidor is at 72 degrees year round. Now, I may be missing out on Ya'll's cigars that have been sitting at 65 or so, or sub zero winters,... but Mine are certainly somthin Ya'll would agree are premo and aged very well. Oh,... and with never a Beatle to be found. And the BBQ? no contest. My smokers and sweet wood Razz beat anyhting you have tasted!

I remember reading someone else suggesting you get a couple of shot glasses, fill them with water, and freeze them. Then, place one in a ziplock bag and inside of your humidor. When it melts swap it out for the other one that's still in the freezer.

I live in Florida too. This was my biggest problem. Until I walked into my son's closet to find a pair of shoes for him. I thought "Dam his closet is cool" and I placed it in there (I had it in my closet before but did not work). Came back the digi red 71 and went back again 69 degrees. I thought I hit the jack pot. Good thing he is only 2 (LOL). I am ave between 69 and 71 degrees.
