I'm new to the boards - I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I've been smoking cigars for quite a number of years - got to go to the Big Smoke in Vegas this year and it was one of the most fun events I've been to in a long time!!
Though I've been smoking cigars for quite awhile, I've always just purchased what I needed and smoked right away. Recently I decided to try to set up a humidor and start storing some of my favorites.
I've been having a problem with my humidor - I seasoned it and it seemed to be working well but now I am having a lot of trouble keeping the humidity in a small range. I have a desktop humidor that holds about 50-60 cigars. I'm using a puck system with Propylene Glycol, which was recomended to me at the cigar shop I bought the humidor from.
I am finding that I can't keep the humidity stable - I fill the puck and the humidity will peak around 74 - 77 and then rapidlly fall off to around 62-63 (within a day). I don't open the humidor that much (once every couple of days when I smoke a cigar).
Is there anyone else out there from Calgary that has a good system for their humidor? Should I scrap the Glycol solution system?
Thanks
You can use beads to help with the humidity if you don't like the puck... I think your problem is you add way too much solution to your puck when you "recharge" it. Next time just add a drop or two in each slit. You shouldn't really need to add that much. This time of year it's difficult to keep humidity above 63%, if that's what you're going for, because of the extremely dry air. If you want to really keep it well controlled you might try beads, or buy a larger humidor and buy an Oasis system for it. I'm not sure using an oasis system for a 60 count humidor is worth the expense.

It sounds as if you may have a seal problem with your humi as well. What brand do you have? While there should be some air exchange, it sounds like your humidor is leaky; something that will show up immediately during winter in the north. For a puck that uses the beads, try: http://www.cigarmony.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=92&products_id=463Welcome to the boards.
