I have only had my humidor for about 2 months, 3 or 4 days ago i checked it and made not to add water this week. when i checked it today mold had formed around the humidfier and a little on the box around it. there was non on any of my cigars, luckily i only had four in there at the time but they all appear to be okay. Is my box salvagable? is there a way to kill off the mold and keep using the box or is it wasted?

Well I would check the humidity and temp, Your temp must of went high and were you using tap water? I would let it dry out and lightly sand the mold with a real fine piece. Let us know if you are using a digitial gauge and how you are preping it to start over again? There are notes on this forum on seasoning your humidor, Good Luck and welcome to the forum. Smile

the tempt did go high, been having a lot of weather changes, hasnt been hot enough to turn on the ac but the room the cigars were in got into the 80's the gauge im using is analog but i have pouches that are supposed to keep the humidity at 72, i dont remember the name and i dont have them handy, supposedly they release moisture if it is below 72 and absorve it if it is above 72. I have an analog gauge but it needs calibration, but it consistantly shows 60, which is low but when i tested it in a bag with a soaked towl it was only in the low 80's unlke the 99 it is supposed to be so i figured 60 was mid to low 70's, after this i will be investing in a digital as soon as i can spare the cash.

Go to Walmart and around the outdoor temp gauges in hardware they carry a digitial Humidity/Temp gauge for $6.00 runs on 1 AA battery. The temp shouldn't go over 70* Find a closet or dresser drawer and keep the humidor out of the sun. Your humidifing piece is A OK. I usually wipe the interior down with distilled water and kepp the lid open for awhile then close and air out until the gauge is around 69 & 69 and then you should be pretty stable after that I would think.

oh, you has asked what i was going to do to prep my humidor to start over again. when i noticed the mold i immediatly put all my cigars in a ziplock baggie took the humidfier and wiped off the mold and then soaked it in rubbing alcohol to kill it it, i also wiped the mold on the box, what little there was, with an alcohol soaked cloth, then let the alcohol soaked humidifier sit inside the closed box for a few hours then opened it all up to let it air out over night.

Probably shouldn't have done that. Remember that any odors you introduce into your humidor will be introduced to your cigars. You may have to let it air out for a long time, and I'd say tht humidifier is shot.
