The US Gov't is worried about $4 bucks a gallon. That would suck. Time for a different source of fuel.

I remember when gas "shot up" to $.75 a gallon in 1977. If you apply the cost of living increase since that time, gas would be $2.36. So, even though it sucks, we aren't doing too bad.

Everyone is complaing about the cost of gas going up so high. "Oh we are paying 2 bucks + a gallon"

Heck it's been 2.30 a gallon out here for at least 6 to 9 months.

Yup, I haven't seen it below 2 a gallon in over a year. We are sitting at 2.30 for unleaded. Funny thing is, 76 and Chevron have rather large refineries about 20 minutes up the freeway.

This is something I have worried about for years. I have spent a lot of time in Europe over the last 20 years and have often thought about what it would do to our economy and our car crazy culture. I live in a rual county and work in the city as do most of the people in my county. As gas prices rise to $3, $4, and could even reach $5 per gallon most of these people will have to move closer to the city or take a lesser paying job here if they can find one. I believe that if we focus on a less expensive form of energy like we have on space exploration and military technology we cauld solf this problem and be less dependant on other nations.

I'm surprised you yanks haven't figured it out yet.

Buy gas in litres!
Its cheaper. I pay $0.90 a litre, beat that.

Weigh yourself in kilograms.
The little woman only weighs 80 sounds better than the lard aSSed witch weighs 175!

And I drive at 100 on the highway. When I speed I go 140. Kilometres per hour that is.

And besides. GM automobiles use metric screws. And everyone knows "What's good for General Motors is good for America"

If all prices of gas go up why is it different from town to town? Is 2.03 in one town here, the very next one the cheapest is 2.27?

Raven,
We have chosen to ignore the environmental impacts of fossil fuels.
They are thus the cheapest option.

That IS the answer to your question. Everything else is more expensive.

Hydrogen made from coal catalysis or coal fired electric power plants is doubly polluting and doubly inefficient.

Solar power. Look at the price of solar water heaters, photovoltaic systems, electric batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen storage systems. Popular Science and Scientific American were writing about this in the 1950's. They're still talking about! Talk, talk, talk.

I envisage a world where only the government leaders and very rich will have personal transportation.

As for military superiority. Oil is important. The alternatives are not as efficient.

I can't imagine gas NOT getting to the $4.00 threshhold. Things are different now that China is in a period of expansion. China is in the process of stock pilling thousand of barrels of oil a week. I think China is doing what we should be doing- preparing for the future, when oil prices are double of what they are now.

I remembered it as at least double that when I was there in 1993.

At least in Alabama it is the taxes. The State has a tax on it and in my county they add a tax and if you buy it in a city in the county they add a tax too.

The rich would stand to loose to much if it came to this in the United States.

The US Military leaders are always planning for anything that could possibly happen. I read an unclassified document in the early 90s put out by the Defence Dept that had had several different events and how the Military would be involved. One of the situations was what would happen if a very cheap and renuable energy source was discovered. I wish I had read that part of the document. Some of the other situations were natural disasters on the east and west coast that completely destroys major cities killing all the residents. There was also an artical on a plague that wipes out whole cities. It was a very interesting document.

Anyway my point being is I am sure there is a form of cheap energy out there that will be discovered that would change life as we know it. As gas prices get higher and as we deplete world oil supplies there will be more and more research do to discover it.
