my son is finishing our basement and wants to be able to smoke cigars with his buddies(and occasionally Dad). My wife is super sensitive to smoke and we will need to make sure no smoke leaves the basement. My son thinks he can install bathroom ceiling fans and vent outside and these will work. I'm not sure - any suggestions will be appreciated.
I have one in my office and it actually works. It bolts to one of the Lowes builder special fans, and away you go.
After a couple hours of it running you won't smell the smoke anymore. If you get a couple guys going it could take a couple hours, but since its only a ceiling fan just leave it running over night since it uses very little power.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.

what type of filter do you use and how often does it need changing?
"Cuban seed tobaccos grown in Nicaragua and Cuba. The wrapper would be from Cuba. The binder leaves would be from Nicaragua. For the ligero tobacco in the filler, he would use two types, one from Esteli and the other from Jalapa in Nicaragua. The other filler components, seco and viso, would come from Cuba, the former from Villa Clara, the latter from Pinar del Rio. That Cigar, he says with pride, would score 100 points." -Don Pepin Garcia

Well, the purifan has many filter options available listed on that web site. Mine just has the standard one that comes with the unit and it has a 3 stage filter with active charcoal.
They have one filter available with double charcoal, which I may try next time just to see. I haven't had mine long enough to know for sure how long it will last, but learned of this product from a cigar lounge in Montgomery,AL that uses them.
They have 2 of these running and it keeps up with the smoke until you get a room full of a dozen cigars or so. Then the exhaust fan is needed. I think he told me they change the filters every couple months or so, but that is some real heavy use. I'm lucky to smoke one or two cigars a day in my office, so I anticipate my filters lasting a while.
You also get good filter cost savings if you buy a case.
Something you guys need to know about this product. At $370 it isn't cheap, but a good value for how well it works. Its plastic, and feels a little cheap, but it doesn't look all that bad.
Also, it is one heck of a pain to get it to mount on the suggested fan dead center. It wobbled and was off center by a mile and took a good couple hours of me getting pissed off on a latter to get it close. It isn't perfect, and they need to improve the mounting system.
The mounting brackets are designed to work with almost any ceiling fan, so they frankly don't fit with the level of perfection I would like. They need to offer a special mount for the suggested fan that will center the unit on the fan motor.
It doesn't matter what color fan body you choose as you can't see the motor with the unit installed. I chose a black motor with the pewter unit.
I strongly recommend this unit as it actually works, its silent, air flow is amazing but doesn't interfere with smoking enjoyment, and best of all its simple. (accept for the installation/centering issues)

thanks bamawrx. i still can't decide to go with this model or a regular floor unit.

I smoke in the den which is on the lower level. My wife tells me she can smell smoke coming up through the floor.
I have a very good filter system in the den and there is little smoke in the room when I am smoking or even have friends over for a smoke, but unless you seal the room, some of the aroma of tobacco smoke will seep through.

I use a Norelco CAS-1050 (No longer being sold) and when I have more than one smoker in the room I use a Royal Soverign portable air conditioner/heater vented to the outside.
