I have been hearing something lately about the Cuban embargo being lifted. I believe there was something about it on JR cigar's website that they were selling some of their stock to make room for the Havanna cigars. Has anyone heard of this, or am I just getting part of the story? Any info would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

Urban legend I have heard this for the last 10 to 15 years. The federal law must be repealeed by congress. Even when Castro becomes worm food, I do notsee it happening. The cigar industry has developed supplies outside of cuba for the American market. I doubt that Cuba makes alot of donations to our political parties. Congress will do what they are paid to do.

Not quite. The Cuban embargo was enacted via Excutive Order. All it takes to end the embargo is another Executive Order. Florida has 47 electoral votes which is about 20% of the electoral votes needed to win the whitehouse. Where are all the Cuban exhiles that Castro screwed living? Florida? You do the math on the embargo ending.
You are on to something about the US companies though. Just think about trademark issues.

A few years ago JR's offered to pre-book your Cuban cigar order. You had to lay out $200.00 (I believe) and you would be put on a list of customers who would be able to buy Cubans once JR's got them after the embargo.

I wonder how many people actually paid that money?

Everyone must remember that most fo the prominent cigar names( partagas, Cohiba, etc) belong to US and European corps. No way are they going to allow their names to be infringed upon in the US market.

Yes the embargo was pout in place by Executive order, (After JFK had Pierre Salinger buy 2500 CC's) However during the Clinton Administration Congress passed the Helms Burton Amendment that requires Congress to lift the Embargo. They made the embargo part of a foriegn aid bill.

It will all come down to who wants to win Florida in the next election. The anti-Castro Cubans are a big bloc down there.

You're right I forgot about this turn of events. Just another reason to dislike both Bill Clinton and the Republican led congress.

You're mistaken about Helms-Burton.

The Helms-Burton Amendment is actually Title IV of the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act (the Libertad Act), signed into law in 1996 by President Clinton. Far from requiring the embargo to be lifted, among other things, it imposes tough sanctions on anyone found to be trafficking in Cuban property that was formerly owned or controlled by a U.S. company before confiscation. These sanctions include the denial of U.S. entry visas to such individuals and corporate executives, including their families.

President Bush, carrying a huge political debt to the Miami-based Cuban exile community, has been consistently ratcheting up the enforcement of Helms-Burton by the Treasury Department.

Even if by miracle the embargo was lifted tomorrow, it would take years of court hearings to settle the copyright issues regarding Cuba's overtaking of cigar brands from the families who created them.

I stasnd corrected. However isn't congressional approval required to lift the ban?

Thanks for keeping me honest
