My husbands birthday is coming up and I want to get him something special. He is a classic cigar smoker, but he has always expressed interest in pipes. I found this pipe on eBay, and I was wondering if it would make a fine birthday present.

Looks like a real beauty to me. But if you really want to have some fun, write down some of his cigar bands from his humi and post them here. Try to give us his most treasured, if you know which ones those may be. You can also ask his cigar buddies privately what he likes.

We should be able to tell what his tastes are based on that, and may be able to suggest some real cigar treats for him.

I know I would flip out if my wife gave me a box of Bolivar Royal Coronas or something.

If I sent you my wife's name, would you give her some tips on buying presents? Smile

Yes, but only if you help mine in return.

Actually, Mrs Bama doesn't need to know about embargoes and things of that nature, or what these things really cost. I guess I will have to be my own best gift giver.

Pipes can be a pain in the a$$ to smoke. They take a lot more effort than a cigar.

Actually, it doesn't take that long to learn the beauties of a pipe. The really neat thing about the pipe is how different it is from a cigar--and how similar. I like my pipes and my cigars both, and both give me great pleasure. I find I smoke my pipe more during the winter and cigars more during the milder and warmer months. It will be interesting to see how this rhythm changes when I finally retire and leave New England for warmer climes.

Fill, tamp, fill, tamp, fill, tamp, tamp, tamp. Don't tamp too hard then can't get a draw. Don't tamp too lightly, will be like sucking air. Too much of a pain for me - I guess not enough patience.

My dad smoked cigars for years and years and as he got older went to the pipe. He always enjoyed a quality cigar from time to time. I have not tried the pipe (well not this kind anyways) yet, guess I'm waiting for my golden years...
