A question that I have for all of the experienced smokers, how long did it take you to be able to identify the hidden flavors in a cigar that you are smoking? I assume that this talent comes from smoking many cigars and many different brands, similar to tasting wine, but is this a valid assumption?

Yes , but your palate is going to pick up something completley different than others . Try your next smoke with just some water , see if that helps with your tasting any . Remember i might be picking up woody earthy notes and you may get spice or peppery notes , eveybodys palate id unique . hope that helps

As you smoke more and a broaden your horizon of sticks, you will learn to appreciate different flavors, textures, nuances, etc. You never stop developing your palate, so something you may not like now may be a fav down the line or vice-versa. My only suggestion would be to try anything and everything. Ya never know what you're gonna like!

And after you have smoked cigars for about 50-years you will be able to tell all of the flavors without even lighting the cigar.

Doesn't take anytime if you focus on what you're smoking. What you experience is what it is, and why flavors are so subjective.

Better cigars will have more taste.

I don't know what it is but my palate will not pick up the leather taste. I have never once tasted leather in a smoke.

Might want to take a peak at the "Tobacconist University Taste College": here. There is some pretty cool information that will get your mind working!

Looking for one more link too...give me a few.
