Have anybody got the new Amazon Kindle ??

It looks like a very convenient method for those who are always on the run, it could be a very easy and cost effective method for reading newspapers as well.

But I don't think I'll like it, for me, nothing beats holding a book in your hands and stuffing it in your book shelf when you finish it.

What do you think guys? Has anybody here got or tried this Kindle??

i totally agree Lucky... I'm not much of a reader, but when I do read a book, i like the feel of it.. reading through the kindle, will be just like reading online.. although it's ok and practical, it will never eliminate real books

Looks like a great idea. But seems way expensive. I usually read on the go so it would be great for me.

I can never read long texts from a screen. My eyes start watering and I start loosing my position on the text. The video on the Amazon web page says that the Kindle does not use back light and uses I-don't-know-what that would make reading from it like reading from a book not from a screen. I'd try it, but I'd probably not stick with it.

My dad has one and really likes it. He gets his favorite papers sent to it every morning. I have fooled around with it and it is a nice machine. Convenient if you are traveling and don't want to have to lug a ton of books around.

I am the same way, but the screen on the Kindle is amazing. No different than looking at a regular book, IMO.

I usually have three, four, sometimes five books going at once. If I still travelled a lot for work, the Kindle would be a tremendous advantage.

I hear the construction of it is sort of cheap-feeling and flimsy. True?

Felt pretty solid to me, though the side buttons do seem a bit fragile. But I imagine it is just like any electronic device -- if you abuse it enough, it will break. Amazon no doubt sells fancy cases and covers for them.

The problem I have with Kindle, or books in electronic format in general, is that you no longer have the ability to resell them.

Stated differently, when I bought the hard cover version of "The World Without Us", I knew that I would be able to read it and then sell it to a used bookstore. However, when you buy the electronic version of that book, you no longer have the right to resell your copy.

starring at the computer screen is like staring into a light bulb, you are not going to last long. I know some smart authors online who, when they write blogs or articles on their personal page, they change the background to black and the fonts to a mellow, warm color like yellow. I really appreciate that as that saves my eyes some wear and tear.

I can't see myself using a Kindle, yet. To me, nothing beats the feeling of holding a book in your hands. The feel, the look & the smell is very special & having said that, I felt the same way about vinyl LP's. Sadly, technology marches on. A CD will never replace the feel of vinyl but vinyl is long gone. & the way things are moving, it seems the CD is on its way out, replaced by downloads in its various formats. It took me a few years but I finally got an iPod & I'm pleased with it & it's performance. I've paired it with the Bose Soundock & it works perfectly well for me.

I would suppose there will be new & improved (& less expensive) versions of the Kindle and/or similar devices. I know myself well enough to realize I'll end up getting one in a few years when the price has come down & they have been improved.

So, yes, I will embrace the technology once it becomes more accessible, just like I did with the iPod. An added bonus to these new deliver systems might be that people will read more, & that always is a benefit. One can always hope.

I'm intrigued...I am not an early adopter and would probably wait until a second version is manufactured. Also, what happens to photos and graphs, etc?

I think I understand how the screen works. It in no way resembles a PC screen, it is much more similar to an electronic etch-a-sketch or magne-doodle. You hit the button and an electronic charge is sent to the screen and brings black toner-like particles to the surface and the particles form the text. You hit the refresh and the particles go away and the next page surfaces.

This thread led me to check to see if the Kindles were in stock again (they have been out for months). They were in so I ordered one.

I will post a review in a week or two for anyone who is interested.

Cool, Coriolanus - I look forward to your impressions! BTW, the screen is a new technology that is sometimes referred to as "digital paper" - the coolest thing about it is that is takes little power to render a page, and then virtually no power to maintain it - like TSF said. It is not like LCD, and it is supposedly very comfortable to read, as mentioned above.

I also found out that all of Hemingway's stuff is available for it. His collected short stories for $10! Hard to beat given the portability.

That's pretty Corio. Give us feedback as soon as you can.
You like Hemingway? I just adore this man. Simply my favorite writer. But I don't know why I can't seem to enjoy his short stories as much as I enjoy his novels. A couple of weeks ago I started re-reading his beautiful novel "The Sun Also Rises" just for the nostalgia. I finished book one but then switched back to the King novel I am currently reading "The Stand". I will continue The Sun Also Rises as soon as I finish it.

I'm a big reader and i like the thought of reading a digital book, but I just can't pull the trigger on it. There is something nice about being able to read a read book and i can't justify the price of the kindle. I mean I would have to buy and download the book anyway, so why not just save myself the money and buy the actual book.

I hear you on this. I collect books have been building my library for twenty years. I decided to go with the Kindle because it is easy to carry and seems to have a pretty broad selection already available for purchase. I will buy electronic copies of stuff I have in paper simply because of the portability (I already own everything Hemingway wrote, for example). I will be traveling a lot this summer, so instead of carrying twenty books with me I will have one slim device.

I don't see it as a replacement but a different format useful in specific situations.

I also like the news and magazine options. I am never going to get dinged at the airport for magazines again.

If i traveled more this would probably be a good alternative, but I tend to take atleast a week or two per book, so I'm never away from home for more that, but i can see the appeal.
