I can understand why patrons at a 4 star restaurant/fine dining establishment would not be happy with a cigar smoker. But over the weekend I went back to my small blue-collar hometown in NE Ohio to care for my father. I ate dinners at a small restaurant/sports bar/watering hole filled with locals -- and nearly all seemed to be chain-smoking cigarettes. The air was mostly hazy and rank. What amazed me is that the attitude I got when I fired up a Fuente (no wise cracks please ). I had previously determined that cigars were permitted, but got sidelong looks and stage-whispered "OMG he's got a cigar." The ironic thing was that the ciagrs tasted flat -- I think the smoke filled atmosphere really knocked down my ability to appreciate a good smoke. Is there some natural struggle between cigarette and cigar smokers that any of you have experienced?
I know a few of my cigarette smoking buddies have the nerve to complain about my cigar smoke. They are accustomed to cigarette smoke which smells and tastes like nothing. When someone wants to smoke something quality that isn't comprised of mostly sawdust, it offends their delicate senses. I am so glad I shed that filthy addiction.

Its gotta be a numbers thing. Although there is a movement against cigarette smokers now too. Cigar smokers are few and far between in comparison, it is easier to say no to a few. The local bar/liquor store sells nicaraguan hand rolled "custom" cigars, but you can't smoke anything but a cigarette there.....go figure!
Cigarette smoke really stinks up a room and the people smoking. Cigar smoke has character and non-cigar smokers just can't understand or appreciate it.

Bobsled touched on it. We are out numbered by cigarette smokers. I would imagine certain people consider it "nomal" to smoke cigarettes and weird to smoke cigars. The smell of cigarettes, imo, has a chemical smell that I can't stand. A cigar is natural. I have never had anyone be offended by my cigar smoke. But then again I usually go to where cigar smokers are welcome with other cigar smokers. I must admit though, that I feel a little intimidated when I'm not sure if I could smoke a cigar in a certain resturant. I look around and if I don't see anyone from our "secret society of cigar smokers ", then I don't bother. I try to be the polite one and not to offend anyone. Then I think about that same group of people who if I did light up a cigar, would they let me smoke my cigar in peace, or be the rude one who says, "Excuse me sir, but your cigar smoke is offending me to my very core." As they exhale a big, giant cloud of cigarette smoke
i am a construction worker in nyc. i get that bs all the time. when i light up a cigar at work....on a construction site.... i hear the comments that "that thing stinks" and "how do you smoke that thing" while there is a malboro hanging out of their mouth. so to be me.... i smoke anyway....
.....beleaguered cigarette and cigar smokers are both slated for extinction by the P.C. anti-smoking Nazis, so they better learn to get along if they hope to survive.....

Stanky, My home is south of Cleveland in Louisville, near Canton. I do travel to Cleveland on business from time to time and would appreciate any suggestions on cigar shops and cigar-friendly restaurants -- downtown or east side, preferably -- I consult at the VA hospital at Wade Park. Thanks!
I know the place, I grew up in Canton. I have only been in cleveland about 20 years. In Cleveland I have never had a problem smoking a cigar anywhere. I go to places like BW3 and other sports bars. As for restaurants, you can smoke at Theory in Tremont at the bar, and next door to it is the 806 martini bar that sells Davidoff, AVO, and Zino's. As for good shops in Cleveland, Go to Dad's at Kames corners (Lorain and Rocky River drive) Cousin's downtown (18th and Euclid) and Cousin's on Chagrin Blvd in Beechwood. Plus, they can ship to you if you find something here that you can't find in Maryland.

I have noticed that cigarette smokers seem to have no regard for the people around them. I smoked cigarettes once and was addicted to it. I believe that cigarettes are nasty and are nothing but an injection systen for nicotine addiction. I also dipped skol once and its the same thing. I quit all tobacco products for several years and started smoking cigars since then I have noticed I can skip hours and days with out them unlike cigarettes and snuff. I now believe that I was addicted to cigarettes and snuff but enjoy cigars and not addicted to them. Having said that I believe that cigrette smokers are so addicted to the cigarette that they will disregard everyone around them to get their fix. I also believe that this is why they get so fired up at laws that ban them from smoking anytime anyplace they want. I believe that it cigarette smokers showed the same respect for those around them that cigar smokers show that there would not be a need for banning smoking in public places.

Yeah, that burns my @$$ when a stinking @$$ ciggarette smoker has the gall to B!tch about a cigar (a premium at that). I have some friends that smoke and host a Friday night Texas Holdem Tourney, they wont let me smoke cigars while we play but they smoke their Cigarette's. Go figure, its thier house so I dont say anything. I just dont go very often though.

I actually had a woman ask me to put out a cigar that I was smoking on my boat at the party cove on Lake Lewisville. She was floating around with her friends about 15 feet from the stern of my boat. I just told her to float up wind and "F" off. That will be the day when I put out a Gurkha expedition that I am enjoying on MY boat. I did derive some pleasure from seeing her blow chunks in the lake about an out later after she turned up a bottle of vodka.
Well i think part of it is envy. Our smoke is full sized and beautiful where theirs is thin and wispy. A cigar can be truly enjoyed where as a cigarette is just a nicotine transfer device for junkies :-). I admit I smoke a cigarette once in a while but only when I'm in a terrible mood.
