Is it just me or does it bug you guys to see men wearing hats or caps at the dinner table in somewhat nice restaraunts? I was always taught that gentlemen remove there hats when inside. Just curious...

It bugs the crap out of me too. After six years in the military and a youth where I got smacked if I wore a hat at the table, I cringe every time I see someone wearing a hat while eating... even if it's just a "niners hat in a mexican restaurant".

I wear a hat most of the time... and I remove it *every* time I sit down at a table, walk into church, etc etc etc.

Agreed. The only time I've ever worn a hat at the table is at certain establishments when I lived in WY and the cowboy hat was expected. Otherwise, it gets hung up or set somewhere out of the way.

Is it a big deal in and of itself? Probably not, the world won't come to an end, I just figure that the idiots wearing hats at the table are the local mouth breathers who don't know any better. But, it is indicative of a general disappearance of manners and civility in society and that's kind of a shame to my way of thinking.

understood partner...at the same time I dont take kindly to being called an idiot...either directly or indirectly...just because my hat wearing code of ethics doesn't conform to yours, it doesn't make me an idiot...and if you felt so inclined to approach me in a restaurant while I was wearing my hat...then I might do you a favor and have a nice long conversation on the matter...or I could tell ya to F off...just depends on how good my Mexican food is that day.

Nothing personal intended flash but in a nicer restaurant, as posited in the post, that is my reaction, for better or worse. It is what it is. I would not comment on it or make an issue but that would be my private reaction. Now, fast food joint or bar with food - no worries. Your Mexican retaurant may be casual enough that I wouldn't care one way or t'other but justawalker said "nice restaurant". To me, that means a place I may have made a reservation for, either for business or with my wife to celebrate for instance. In that environment - sorry wearing hats is poor taste in my opinion.

throw a rock into a pack of dogs and the one who gets hit is the one who yelps...geez

I take my hat off even if I am eating inside at McDonalds...why? because we were taught ot have good manenrs...if you look around there is a general decline in just basic politness and manners...it is the same with people who wear big cowboy hats at the movies...

tell me...anyone here under ...say....30...whose parents tuaght them to remove their hat at the table...any table? Just curious. because most of the people I ask, they tell me they've never been told...I think it is a basic politeness that has been lost over time...just one of those things that have faded away.

Does anyone know where this mannerism comes from? I only know of it because my mom would yell at me if I wore my hat to the dinner table. I will definitely take my hat off at a nicer restaurant.

All of that being said, it seems that the role of hats has really changed in society. Stated differently, men don't really wear dress hats anymore and typically only wear baseball hats. Being a fan of the show Mad Men, it seems that wearing a hat *was* an important part of your status in society. I had to laugh when Draper said something to the affect of, "I don't trust him, he doesn't even wear a hat."

I don't know where the "prohibition" against hats at the table came from although its an interesting question. I observe the manners and protocol if you will but may also have a different take on hats. I wear them for a purpose and purchase them to suit that purpose. First and formost, I wear a hat to keep warm or to keep the rain off. I've found that if my head is covered with a hat, the whole body stays warmer as is the case with the rain or snow. Now, a ball cap or knit hat wouldn't fit with a suit and overcoat going to the office or on business so, I own a number of wool flat caps (you know, the kind that look right at home in an old 2 seater MG) and I own a good brimmed hat, I think of it as a fedora but it is actually some other obscure style know only to haberdashers. I also wear a hat to keep the sun off my head when outdoors in the summer and so own a couple of straw cowboy hats as, IMHO, ball caps do a poor job of this - better than nothing mind you but if I'm spending the day on a trout stream or working in the yard, I want a brimmed hat. The only ballcap I wear is from the Ugly Dog Hunting Company and is hunter orange, I wear it with my bird hunting vest when I'm hunting to, hopefully, keep from getting shot at in the woods.

Given that, to me, hats serve a purpose, it only makes sense when that purpose doesn't exist. If I came indoors from the rain and found the roof leaking terribly, I would probably not take off my hat. Otherwise, I don't need it anymore so, off it comes.
