It's no secret that the Massachusetts republican party is in shambles, virtually non existant. What type of support does Romney have within his own party? Two former republican governors who preceeded Romney have endorsed other candidates, with Paul Celluci going for Rudy and Jane Swift endorsing McCain. Of the elected officials in the state house and senate, the few republicans who remain seem to be looking elsewhere, with the the minority leader in the senate and a couple of others saying htey will not support Romney.
Romney was often critical of the state he governed in campaign swings across the country, and the old adage of not shtting where you eat seems to be haunting him now.
If the republican primary were held today, I seriously doubt taht he would carry Massachusetts.

Seems to be all over the ideological map. And I think many southern evangelicals will balk at his Mormonism (though not publicly). The uber-conservative evangelical vote seems to be with Sam Brownback, whose campaign gains momentum in those circles almost daily.
Not much name recognition outside of Massachusetts. But Bill Clinton was largely unknown outside of Arkansas until he finished strong in the New Hampshire primary, and Romney may position himself as a good compromise candidate in what promises to be a tight Republican race.

Now, yet another convenient change in philosophy for Mitt -- another 'epiphany'. Before beginning his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney took out a lifetime membership in the NRA! In the recent past, of course, he's been a vocal advocate in favor of gun control. When he unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in the mid-90s, he campaigned in favor of a 5-day waiting period on handgun sales and a ban on assault-type weapons, and continued that position while governor.
Oh. And not for nothin', but in the 1992 presidential primary in Massachusetts, Romney voted for Democratic favorite son, the late Paul Tsongas, then a liberal U.S. Senator from the Commonwealth, instead of Republican George Bush 41.
Currently he's polling at 13% in New Hampshire.

For the sake of brevity, let's summarize this into one sentence:
"He was for it before he was against it"
Must be something in the water in Mass (other than Teddy and Mary Jo's car)
"Lord, please let me be the person my dog thinks I am"
