I lived in Springfield for 5 years (96-01) studying and working with the Symphony Orchestra. I just visited a year ago and was amazed at the change. It's starting to get some really nice restraunts in the center of town and it's got a great cigar store (Just for him). The best part about Springfield is Andy's Frozen Custard! I miss that stuff!

I'm in KC, MO...not exactly close to ya. I grew up in Bartlesville OK, so I have passed thru Joplin on occasion. I've even been to Branson (blech!) a few times. God I hope I never have to go there again

Count me as one of the "used to live there". I lived and worked in Carthage for 6.5 years (77-83). My wife finished her degree at Mo Southern. Nice area and friendly people.

SamsCPA: Yes, it is beautiful down here. All the great scenery. You have prairie regions, glades, the Ozark mountains, great forests, many lakes. Very nice for a biology grad., like myself.
Karajan: Yes, I like Just for Him. Lots of great, unique stuff in there. Would love to get back there soon. Unfortunately, the only time I've eaten at Andy's... it was HORRIBLE! My g/f and I thought... "overrated!"... but everyone around here raves about it when they go to Springfield. I think we are going to have to try it again, sometime. Just curious... when you were around, were there any cigar bars, or any places that you enjoyed going for a drink and cigar?
Tadpui: Yes, I agree.... A trip to Branson can be torture. I don't know what I think about that place. I had been there a few times as a kid, on the way to my g'ma's house. We are actually camping on Table Rock Lake this coming weekend. It's going to be a bit southwest of Branson. I hope to go around, instead of going smack dab through the circus. I imagine it's going to be getting busy again, really soon... especially since it's going to be like 85 degrees on Saturday, there.
Any other Missouri, or former Missouri, people around????

One thing I forgot to ask on the other post is, I remember a rib place in Joplin called "Frankie's". Is it still around? Used to be on the north side of Joplin in a pretty small run down place. They had some of the best ribs around.

Jekinger... I don't know of a Frankie's... but while I was out today, I did realize there is a place called Poochie's Rib Pit on Broadway. Is that about where Frankie's was? Where did you have to get cigars at, around here, when you lived here? I go to a place called Freerick's. It's a pretty cool place. Got a good selection in their humi.
Gomer... Cool! Just up the interstate from here.
I'm glad there are some Missouri folks out there. And even several that "used to be" in Joplin area.

St. Louis area here. My mother in law lives in Ozark. My wife drives down there once in awhile and stays with her sister in Springfield. I usually only drive down for the day and come back. I like Lamberts
If any of you are up this way, let me know and we can get together and have a smoke.

Tree Frog I think Frankie's was on Broadway when I think about it. As far as where I bought cigars back then, that was before I was buying good handrolled cigars. Only a few machine made cigars that I bought at the bait stores on my fishing trips. There are some great lakes down in that part of the country.

Rick... Yes, Lamberts is awesome! "Home of the Throwed Roll" I love that place. I have some friends ( a married couple) that won't ever come visit us in Joplin, but rather want to meet in Springfield, and everytime, we have to eat at Lamberts! I'll be over around there again on Friday. We're going camping south of Bran-Vegas, er, I mean, Branson this weekend, on Table Rock Lake.
And yes, some awesome lakes down this way.
jayselle... Where you shop for cigars in Tulsa? We were there a couple weekends ago, and stumbled onto Fogue & Bates. I thought it was a pretty cool shop. Got there right at close on a Sunday. Picked up a couple great smokes there.
jekinger... I bet it is at the same place as this "Poochie's". It looks like a hole-in-the-wall, been around for a while, been 20 different restaurants, place. So, I bet that was probably it. It's just down a block from the fish market.

I have only been to The Humidor, which is downtown, 6th and Main, and Teds Pipe Shop which in in Utica Square and 51st and Sheridan.
I will have to lookup Fogues and Bates and give them a try.
TreeFrog Poochies sounds like the place Frankies used to be. When you mentioned that it was down the street from the fish market I knew that was the place. The fish market you speak of is a resturant right? Clam shells all over the outside? Went there once for dinner, don't remember much about the food, but the lady who owned it said she was the original St Pauli beer label girl. She had a big portrait on the wall of her in her younger days. My wife saw the resemblance so I guess it was true, not wanting to disagree with her. She claimed that she was living in Germany when she became the model for the label. Moved here after WW 2. Interesting place and conversation with her that night.

Sounds cool. I think the fish market has changed hands a few times since then. Matter of fact, I know it closed a couple months back, and re-opened not long after. But I bet that is it. I haven't been to either the fish market, nor the bbq place. I have heard that the fish market is an excellent place to get fresh fish. The sous chef at the restaurant I work at gets sushi-quality tuna from them. Raves about them.

Sorry about the late post...I've been out of town.
In downtown Springfield on Walnut Street there is a restaurant called "Bajans". First off, the restaurant is incredible for Springfield which I've actually heard has quite a few nice restaurants since I've left. Up stairs they have a cigar lounge. I smoked there all the time and if you're into star sighting Brad Pitt hangs out there when he's in town visiting his parents. They have a humidor there but I always would bring my own. That's the only one I know of.

I looked it up. It's a place called Bijans Sea & Grill. I'm going to call and get some more info on it. May make a trip up to Springfield on Sunday. Might have to check it out. Sounds cool, though! Thanks for the heads up!!!
