It has started already! Right off the bat, a $40,000 buyin event. I think they should raise the buyin for the main event to $50,000 so the pros have more of a chance of winning, but then again, I can understand keeping it the way it is so the little guys have a shot.
Many of the "Pros" (big named), don't even have to pay to play.
I know, this sounds like "Sour Grapes", and maybe it is, but some of these guys act and are total a$$...

So are a lot of actors and athletes, but that doesn't make them less enjoyable to watch them do what they do. For every Matsukow or Helmuth, there is an Ivey or Negreanu.
You're right that many players do not pay for themselves anymore, but that goes for both pros and amateurs. I just think getting more pros to the final table gives the WSOP Main Event Champion title more legitimacy. They do have the Player of the Year title, but does any one care about that?
Everyone who reaches the final table is a pro. To win the WSOP, a player must have a basic understanding of Poker, and be the "Luckiest SOB" in the world...

By pro, I mean someone who does it for a living, and no, not everyone who makes it to the final table plays poker for a living. Sure you have to be lucky. As Phil Hellmuth said, "If it weren't for luck, I'd win every tournament."
Day one of the main event is over with 6494 entrants. I believe the winner will get $8.5 million out of the $61 million pot. Looking forward to checking in once in a while: http://www.worldseriesofpoker....sp?tid=7283&grid=607

well, that requires players to be really good at poker, not holdem so hellmuth has no chance. that being said, id be much more scared of other players before hellmuth and even matusow for that matter. just catch a card and send em on tilt
Depends on the game who would worry me. Playing large tournament holdem it hard to argue with Hellmuth's success. The real championship is the HORSE title, which Hellmuth has very little chance of winning.

Day 7 of the Main Event is about to start with 64 players left. Two of the more well-known players still left are Phil Ivey and Antonio Esfandiari, both with lots of chips to play with (3rd and 6th in chip count respectively). One name I'm surprised to see is Dennis Phillips, the trucker who made the final table last year. Everyone thought it was a fluke he finished 3rd last year, but he's definitely earned my respect now.

One thing I don't like about the WSOP is that if you make the final table, you have to come back to play it in November. Does anyone know the justification for that? It's like having the Superbowl play its 4th quarter a few months later. What if you die in a car accident before then?
