I'm a young (18 years old) and novice cigar fan. we really only have a couple good cigar shops where I live, and I enjoy looking at cigars on websites like famous smoke and thomsoncigar, however they say you have to be 21 to buy, why is this. Do they even really have any idea if your 18, not to mention 21? do you have to enter a drivers license at any point in time or anything like that?

We do not use the "T" word here.

They will charge you too much for poor quality cigars.

There are lots of on-line retailers.

Yes they will ask for a drivers license because there are state laws about selling tobacco to under 21 patrons.

www.jrcigars.com
www.holts.com
www.cigarsinternational.com
www.famous-smoke.com
www.cigarbid.com (very addictive)

This is just a very short list of popular and decent cigar retailers.

If you tell them that you are 18 they might not sell to you. Have a parent of friend buy for you.

I use this website as a guide for cigar prices, http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/uploads/cms/comparison_shopper_prices.html

Totally agree with Doc. "That company" markets pretty well (glossy catalogues and all) but do NOT give them your e-mail adress. Another good source is Mike's Cigars.

I completely agree with Doc, but for whatever reason you might need other vendors, here's a big list from cigarcyclopedia: http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/popup/index.php?p=/ranki...gars_wide.php?&id=17

As you can see, the "T" is dead last (out of 75) in terms of pricing on those 4 vitolas.

Just my opinion here.

I would suggest that you start off by developing a good relationship with your local B&M. (Brick and mortar. A term for a storefront business) Talk to them, and see which ones have the most knowlegable staff, and the best selection. Decide which ones you feel most comfortable in. If they have a smoking lounge, all the better.

If you spot something in one of the online catalogs that you would like to try, write down the details, and check the local shops first, and see if they have any in stock. Buying 1 or 2 at you local shop will let you try them out immediately, as well as helping your local shop stay in business.

There are a LOT of different cigars to try out, and if you take your time, you can work through them, and decide which ones you like.

I would also reccomend that you buy a small notebook, and keep a record of which ones you have tried, and what you thought of them. This will help you avoid repeating cigars, and help determine which strength and style appeals to you.

A journal is indeed a MUST! There are so many cigars out there that you'll never be able to keep them straight as you're starting your journey!

CI just asks for age... you could lie, they arent responsible for what happens since you said you were 21...

Famous smokes... they are a nice shop, but damned if they accept regular debit/credit cards... echecks? It seems fishy to me, thats all. Never ordered from em, just looks great, comparable to CI, but CI is the best cigar retailer online.

NEVER GO WITH CIGAR DOT COM... Damn expensive...
