I effing HATE Vista. I mean WTH: I just clicked on the stupid icon, don't ask me if I MEANT to click on the stupid icon.
I do all my development with Server 2008, a truly great OS that can be left on for months at a time with no breakdowns. Everything just runs incredibly well on Server '08. How the same company that makes the POS Vista can make that good of an OS is beyond me.
So the question is: Do I switch to Windows 7 for this laptop (haven't had the nerve to try and install Server '08 on a notebook yet)? Or wait and let everyone else be the guinea pigs?
Oh by the way, to all you Cohiba-smoking superior Mac users: I've used and abused Macs in the past and they haven't been much better, reliability-wise. Besides I have to use Windows so don't tell me to switch.

I agree with you. Server 08 is awesome, and Vista leaves almost everything to be desired. Thats why i keep my entire company running XP Pro on all the works stations, and 08 on all four of my servers.
As for 7, i say give it a shot. If you get the 64 BIT version, remember that a fair amount of software, and drivers do not work with the 64 Bit OS. Other than that, it can't be worse than Vista can it?

I don't like macs either...
I'd say wait for some reviews to come out before you try it, but I have heard good things

*Sigh*
Good call, I've already run into that. Just did an install of the new version of my software, and started getting some weird errors on Vista x64. Turns out one of the 3rd-party controls bombs on 64 bit.
It's not enough to test on various OS platforms anymore, now we have to worry about 32/64 bit stuff. Aargh. I'm gonna need about 16 computers to test with.

I've been told that W7 is nothing more than a debugged version of Vista that has been renamed.
I hanging onto XP as long as possible.

I'm running Vista right now, haven't had too much trouble with it. My wife on the other hand, has wanted to throw her PC out the window many times because of the problems she has had with Vista. I'm waiting to see what the UW decides to do before I buy anything new.

+1. I don't think 7 will be a whole lot better or different. However, I haven't had any problems with Vista on my laptop so I'm not really complaining.

That is an oversimplification at best. Vista SP2 is a "debugged" version of Vista. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. 7 handles a lot of back-end tasks differently than Vista does (did). Further from a development point of view Microsoft changed the way it dealt with 3rd parties regarding device driver development and handling bugs found by beta testers. 7 is smaller, more efficient, offers more features, and is much faster than Vista. The end result is a great OS
I installed 7 RC over the summer on a 4 year old Dell XPS with no problems. The installer found all the drivers needed and had that system up and fully function in about 15 minutes flat. If you are running XP and have no problems and are not interested in any "whiz bang" new features, you should stick with it. If you Vista and are pulling your hair out, this upgrade is for you. If you are looking to breathe fresh air in an older computer, definitely get 7.
