Does anyone have advice for a cigar afficionado whose wife doesn't like cigars? I generally don't smoke around the house because I've got young kids who I don't want to give the wrong ideas about smoking in general to. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I believe the operative term of art here would be, "EX-WIFE" no?

Tricky problem. The only thing I can suggest is A) do your smoking outside, B) make it an occassional two or three-times a week thing, and C) shower and put your "smoking clothes" straight into the laundry afterward. Thus the odors and problems will be minimized.

I only smoke outside, in my car, or at the cigar bar. If you don't smoke around the house, the only items left to complain about are the ones already mentioned (residual odors on your person), plus the health effects of cigar smoking, and the cost of buying premium cigars...

Too bad there's not a cigar smoker's dating service or something for single stogie smokers. Big Grin

If she knew you smoked cigars before you got married then she has to deal with it. You shouldn't have to go outside of your house to enjoy a cigar. If there's children in the house then yes, go outside. If she doesn't like the smell of the cigar smoke, then you need to find yourself another woman. Grow some balls for crying out loud.

Listen to the Monk. The longer you stay married, the less this will be an issue.

Take it easy, Rockhound. Why so incensed at what was a benign and worthy question? There's no need to question the guy's masculinity. We've all gone through what he's talking about to some extent or another.

Not smoking cigars in the house is the only courteous thing to do if one's partner doesn't like it. Not being able to spark up in front of the television is a small price to pay if you're going to keep the respect of your woman.

I only smoke outside and I make sure to put my smoking clothes in the laundry after I'm done. I also make sure to brush my teeth and wash my face before anything else

yeah, my fiancee doesn't like it either, but sometimes i'll have her come with me to the cigar bar to buy some cigars and have one there and she won't put up a fight or nothing, so for the most part, she doesn't bother me with it, she'll ask me to brush my teeth, put on some cologne, and wash my face and hair, but it's something that i do and have been doing for quite awhile, i won't change that just because she doesn't like it, and she knows it, besides, for people like us who smoke cigars and post on forums like these, this is our hobby, not a habit, we really enjoy this, and i bet if you asked her to cut down on something that she enjoys to do, i bet she'd be red hot pissed, so i doubt this will become a big problem in your marriage Smile

I'm a nonsmoker and now I smoke cigars with my husband. Invite your wife to smoke with you. I would have never thought of smoking until my husband invited me. I had an Acid Kuba Kuba. Not my fav. now but it was an interesting time! I have to lure Rick to smoke with me now.

I am lucky that my fiancee was raised by a cigar smoking father. She came "pre-broken in". She doesn't enjoy ther smell so I only smoke when she is working late, outside and with her dad (he makes me! Big Grin ). I am considerate and wash up, brush teeth, change clothes, spray of colonge and get only the occasional complaint. Consideration and thoughtfulness goes a long way.

I have a wife who doesn't mind it at all. She even buys me cigar accessories as gifts. Granted I ony smoke one or two per week, and it's always outside in the evenings. But after reading this post I feel lucky! Big Grin

If the government doesn't put a cigar ban on your residence I guess the wife has to. Anyway, my wife is pretty understanding. I can have a smoke whenever I want, just not in the house. I respect that and can understand her point of view. Hopefully most women are understanding and respect that we enjoy a good stick.

The misses hates my cigar smoking but respects my passion for it. I always smoke outside on my patio. Smoking clothes go in the laundry and mouth gets a good cleaning lest I got without kissing my wife for the rest of the evening.

I don't have kids but if I did, I'd smoke anyway. I think it's a matter of teaching your kids about what you're doing. Educate them on what a cigar is, how its made, its history, etc. Then tell them they can't smoke until they're 18. Only when they turn 18, they can start buying you cigars!

Luckily my wife doesn't really mind, as long as I don't do it all the time. I always go outside so the furniture doesn't smell. Makes it hard to smoke during the winter, but occassionally it gets warm enough to go outside long enough for a stogie.

Last weekend I was smoking a flavored cigar and my wife liked the smell and starting getting curious. She'd never smoked before, so I asked her if she wanted a puff and just as I was handing it to her her mother called. She tried it after she hung up and liked it, so maybe she'll get more into it in the future.
