Anyone live near DC that could give me pointers as to where people live. A job that I may apply for is in Rockville, MD.

I've done some research, but figured if someone could point me in the right direction, it would make things a whole lot easier.

Single family home in the suburbs if that is even realistic.

Thanks.

Hi azsar,
I live in Potomac MD which is just southwest of Rockville. We moved here about 10 years ago, but the prices of homes has skyrocketed. Potomac has a reputation locally as being on for the very rich -- however I am not rich, just got lucky when I bought. A lot of the high and mighty have mansions around here, but we live in a nice colonial. A lot of people like Rockville, Germantown, Montgomery Village to live as well. We moved to this location due to the schools in Montgomery County.
The online edition of the Washington Post is a place to do some more research The Washington Post
Some people move farther north, some as far north as Frederick, MD which is a brutal commute. Keep in mind that northern VA is another option, and may not be quite as expensive. The real estate market around here is nuts.

Thanks Dan. I looked at real estate in a number of places in the area and it seems like there are almost exclusively condos for sale or little houses that are outrageously priced. I'm going to do some more research, but it's not looking too good so far.

Thanks again.

Also check in Virginia -- Sterling, Herndon, out that way. Some people also move south closer to Quantico and Woodbridge, and I suspect the market is not quite as pricey.
We moved here from the San Francisco Bay area, another hot market, so the sticker shock was not as severe.
The Washington Post has a weekly article called "where we live" that highlights some area around the DC area; and the Real Estate section on Sunday generally has a chart that describes market trends. Best of luck to you.

If you're going to live in DC you better carry a good automatic rifle and drive an up-armored humvee. Big Grin

Prices are going up in Phoenix, too. I try to keep track of sales in my neighborhood, but hadn't checked for a few months. My neighbors sold theirs the other day -- four calls the morning the listing went online, all above the list price. Went for about 30% more than the going price of 3 months ago. Confused Problem is that as our house goes up in value so do those that we hope to be abble to afford in a few years.

We are going through the same thing down here. The good neighbors from NJ/NY/PA are moving down here in droves and bringing suitcases full of money to pay for homes. The housing market has gone bonkers. Driving up the property values like peckers on viagra. I guess it's the final invasion from the Yankees. Big Grin Binder - you paying attention??? Smile

I hope you will have a great paying job.... The good homes start at 500,000 to 600,000 in and around this area and that is w/o a yard. The 270 corridor is booming with new homes to purchase. Germantown, Rockville, Frederick, Olney and Potomac are good places to look for a house.
