I just got a subaru forester, and there is a small compartment in the center console that is just begging to be turned into a humidor. It would be about the perfect size to fit 5 or 6 decent sized torpedos after installation of spanish cedar etc. anyone else tried this? any suggestions from those who have built their own humidors? i was thinking about just cutting up some of the cigar boxes i have for the cedar since they would be about the right size and fitting them to the compartment.

I have a Miata and I was thinking th same thing about my center console. I still haven't figured out if I want make a humidor out of such as yourself or if I should just put something like a cigar caddy in there.

i wouldnt make it so that it was really secured in there, but rather make it so that it fits snugly in and can be removed if ever necessary (never as long as i have the car Smile)

The main problem I see is the temp. In the summer, the temp would get way too hot - hello cigar beetles. In the winter, it would be much too cold.

Why not find a travel humidor that fits nicely into the center console instead?

yeah temperature would be your biggest problem and I dont really see a way around that.....If you do decide to go ahead anyways i'd forgo cutting up empty boxes and get a small piece of 1/4 spanish cedar.......color can vary from piece to piece so you always wanna line a box with stock cut from the same tree, plus a piece that size would only run you 10$ or so.....

But like I said, temp variations would be a disaster.......i remember reading how some bentleys come with stock humi's in the glove compartment.....I wonder how they solve that problem or if they have at all........

yup i was discussing this with a friend and we both decided that i wouldnt be able to leave the cigars in there due to the temp as you guys said. so this would be used for long car trips mostly.

why not just buy a travel humidor? its more expensive, and i like to build things, even if they don't work. i like the challenge of trying to do it almost as much as the idea of having a humidor in my console.

But if you are not going to maintain it as a humidor and only use it on long trips, it won't be ready for use. It takles a while to season a humidor. I think your best bet would be to buy a humi-pouch and put your cigars in that and stick it in the center console. Or, as has already been suggested, get a travel humidor.

Even then, you don't want to leave your cigars in the hot (or cold) car all day. The cigars should just be in the car when you are. Otherwise, there is a strong chance you will ruin your smokes.

Some ideas, no matter how good they originally sound, are not practical. This seems to be one of them.

When you drive a Bentley, I don't think you need to worry about which tempature controlled garage it stays in...

LMAO Rob i think you hit it with the "this is not one of them." bad idea? yeah. am i still going to do it? yeah. i think im going to go with one of the climmax humi sticks to put in there. i will be using some of TTs faves (cheap ones) to test this out. The humi sticks stay in, the cigars only in for the duration of the trip. im one of those people who gets an idea in their head (good or bad) and wont let go till ive tried it. this explains a lot of my scars.

Since you want to do it I say go for it. What do you have to loose? Worse case scenario is that you ruin a couple cigars, but you'll still have had fun doing it. Plus, whether it works or not, you will be the only one on the board who can say he has a humidor built into his car! Big Grin

will definitely post the before and after pics. im able to use just one cigar box to do the job so all the cedar is pretty similar. question tho, should i varnish the ouside of the box to seal in the humidity? so far i have spent 3.50 on glue...right on budget Big Grin

varnish will work but has the possibility of adding a distasteful smell to your humi.......I always go with very thin layers of shellac sanded between coats.......try and use flakes but if all you can find is premixed stuff in a can dilute it to the consistency of water and apply multiple coats.....sand with 600grit in between or some xtrafine steel wool..

I've seen a car humidor on ebay before. They are made for the chrysler Cross-fire and are built to go into the center console. If I remember they are about $250.
