New to the boards here, Semi new smoker. (smoked cigars before, but didn't really know what I was doing, now I'm getting more serious about it)
I'm currently in Iraq, and been getting really excited about going home here soon, and have really wanted to get serious about cigars, so I have!
I order a Salerno Humi (oasis xl, digi hydrometer), and over $200 in cigars to get me started. From what I've smoked so far, i tend to like medium, with a smooth taste. Everything from cheap (Sancho Panza) to expensive (Ashton Cabinet) A pretty good mix after doing a lot of research on the CA reviews.
Anyways, all this stuff is being shipped to my house, and I totally blanked that it could be up to 10 days before I'm at my house... What should I do if the cigars show up a few days before I get home? The cigars were ordered from Holts, and I don't know how they are shipped.
I "COULD" have my gf toss them into the humidor, but I want to season it first, and I don't know if she could figure out the finer details (or want to for that matter, haha)
Will they be okay in the orginal shipping packages, sitting in a cool dark place in the house?
Thank you all, and I can't WAIT to get more in depth in the world of cigars!

A week or so won't do irreversible damage to the cigars. If your girlfriend can put them somewhere where it is around 70 degrees, then you can prevent beetles. A damp place could cause mold, so have her be careful.
Once you get home, get the humidor seasoned and get the cigars in there.

thank you for the reply. Its winter time, so somewhere below 70 shouldn't be hard. Like I said, They should be there for less then a week before I can take care of it.
If it's just 10 days, you should be OK. Just tell your GF put your stogies in a sealed something (large ziploc bag or plastic container) together with a piece of wet sponge. And if they are shipped with some sort of humidification, then even that is not needed.
Don't know how savvy is your girl, but in any case you'd rather do the humi seasoning yourself. That way it's safer and also more fun for you.

Should it be done for the same amount of time? 48hrs or so? ???
I think it will be ready for you when you get home if it is running for 10 days

anyone have experience with Holts, and how they ship their sticks? Im guessing they will only be there for 3-5 days before i get there. I think I will have my gf drop the oasis in the box, and let it go until I get home, then I should be able to drop them in.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most of these things sit around in less than optimal conditions for months before they are sold anyway. If I remember correctly, Holts uses UPS as their primary carrier. Three to four days to Midwest.

Leave the cigars in whatever plastic they were shipped in and then put them in large Ziplock bags with a small piece of damp (not dripping wet) paper towel in each bag. By small I mean about half of a single sheet folded a few times. It would be ideal to use distilled water on the paper towel but tap water will be ok for a short time.

If your girlfriend has access to a cooler, let her just but the boxes in the cooler with a dampened sponge and leave them there until you get home and get the humidor setup.. Otherwise as stevesur said, put the boxes in a couple of large ziplocks.
10 days is not too bad.

On second thought, you should have your girlfriend immediately proceed to the nearest reputable cigar shop and have her buy you an Elie Bleu desktop humidor. She should then carefully season it and then place your cigars inside. When you step in the door, she should be waiting for you with your cigar clipped and lit. You might also tell her to have some drinks ready.

My wife will on occasion light up a small cigar, a petit corona or tres petit corona. Some women like the flavored stuff, too. You never know -- she will tolerate your smoking more if she feels like she can be a part of it once in a while.
