I live near Birmingham, Alabama. I was watching the local news and they were running a story on the hearings to confirm Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State. I was sickened by the remarks of City Councelwoman Smoot. Smoot is an African American Woman and a Democrat. She had many bad things to say about Condy Rice. She said when asked what she thought about the first African American Woman Secretary of State "She (Ms Rice) was not black enough". What does the Secretary of State have to with being black? Smoot needs to get off the "race waggon" and be proud that someone regardless of gender or race from Birmingham will hold such a high office. Smoot stated that Ms Rice was "not black enough" because she was a republican. This is crap she must feel that African Americans that are Republicans are turning their backs on their race. Smoot you are a racist pure and simple. I do so hope you are run out of office for making public commit like this.
I like Condoleezza Rice and think she will do an outstanding job. I think Bush made a great choice choosing Ms Rice as Secretary of State. I am proud that Ms Rice is from Birmingham, Alabama the same place I was born. Ms Rice is a great woman and I wish her the best of luck with her new job. She is a credit to her race, the human race.

Well put Raven, I also like how she told off Mrs B.Boxer, Ms. Rice will hold her ground and is very good for this job, regardless of skin color or being female.....

I agree wholeheartedly. I found many of the comments given by the comittee churlish and condescending. Instead of celebrating the appointment of a well qualified candidate, these petulant blowhards feel they have a right to chastise a very competent public servant. God forbid some new blood will outshine their tired and tarnished images. I also thought it was very inappropriate to attack an African American woman during this time of remembrance for MLK Jr. Where are the cries of outrage from every minority watchdog group? Probably still mulling over how to explain their silence when those opposed to Rice called her an Aunt Jemima. There needs to be some soul searching done in this country.
Ain't that tough enough?!

Anyone find a link to this at all? I have not heard a word of this.

I don't know about a link but CNN repeatedly showed Rice and Sen Boxter from CA squaring off. Rice held her ground and even mentioned about taking it off-line.
