Hey custom humidor, winecooler humidor, and cabinet humidor geeks: I've found a great hygro-thermometer that is professional looking, accurate, can be humidity and temperature calibrated, and hosts a remote sensor.

Extech Digital Remote Hygro-Thermometer

User Manual

It's just about perfect. And it's also affordable. Note that you can get a NIST certified version for three times as much, lol.

Thought I'd share! Cheers.

This model is even better, with all the features of the above PLUS humidity alerts based on user HI/LOW set points, and dewpoint display (which tells you when ambient condensation will occur, and helps to indicate mold growth conditions):

Extech Digital Remote Hygro-Thermometer Alert II

Information Sheet

User Manual

Note that these are semi-professional units, which are much better than the cheaper digital hygrometers sold for cigar applications, even the "nice" ones such as the "Hygro-Set" Roll Eyes. Note the accuracy ratings - very good, and remember that these ratings are strengthened by discrete calibration, should you choose to do so.

CA should do a note/blurb on these for serious collectors - they monitor and display exactly everything you need to know about your cigar environment, without any cheap side-frills, and they can be user calibrated for both humidity and temperature <!>. This unit will warn you when humidity is too high and when it is too low, per your own preferences. There is a non-remote-sensor version for both of these units as well.

As always, the *best* indicator for the health of your cigars is your own tactile assessment.

I don't know about you guys, but this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Very cool.

Cheers!

Both Extech units have a Humidity Basic Accuracy of ±4%RH which is not very good.

The HygroSet has a Humidity Basic Accuracy of ±2%RH

Exactly. I would expect better than that from something which is supposed to be "professional or semi-professional" and is 2-3X the price of other digital hygro/thermometers.

This is not that bad at all, and it is taking into account the entire operating range of the humidity sensor. And it will be more stable than any cigar hygro you will find, I don't care what they claim on the box. That includes the “HygroSet.”

Not to mention that the operating accuracy will be much better than the rated accuracy for narrow range applications such as cigar environments, especially if you have calibrated the unit at or near your desired target.

I do not buy the “HygroSet” accuracy rating for one second, btw, as they are not required to adhere to any specific accuracy standard and are probably just listing an extremely small accuracy range. What they are doing is appealing to cigar users.

Anyway, it's not as cut-and-cry as you are making it out to be, regarding stated accuracy ratings.

If you think that a cheap little "HygroSet" unit has a 2.5% accuracy rating at a broad range, then I think you've been had. Big Grin

Cheers!
