According to the news, a recient poll shows that 1/3 of Americans believe the attack on 9/11 is a U.S. Government conspiracy and was not an attack.
I find it hard to believe there are this many people here that are this stupid.
If it was a conspiracy then there are thousands involved in this conspiracy. If this is true there is no way it could remain a big lie. One problem with conspiracys involving large numbers of people is that it could never remain a conspiracy. Some one would let let the cat out of the bag.
What do y'all think?

Agree completely. Not possible that the awful 9/11/01 attacks were a government conspiracy. Rediculous and I also wonder how so many people could believe that.
Just thinking about it. Even a minor scandal is hard to keep secret. Eventually someone talks or tells somebody else and the details get out.
And computers, phone calls and emails would likely be involved ... and then it always gets out.

I dont think that it would involve thousands of people, plus wars were fought over far less than is at stakes since 9/11. The money that changed hands since then and contracts that have been awarded makes it very likely that those were not simple attacks by people that learned hiow to fly a Chessna a couple of months beforehand.
In the light of the alarming levels of ignorance in the USA which threatens your ability to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy.
Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections.
Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
1. You should look up “revocation” in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up “aluminum”. Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘favour’ and ‘neighbour’, skipping the letter ‘U’ is nothing more than laziness on your part. Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter ‘Z’ (pronounced ‘zed’ not ‘zee’) and the suffix “ize” will be replaced by the suffix “ise”. You will learn that the suffix ‘burgh is pronounced ‘burra’e.g. Edinburgh. You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as ‘Pittsberg’ if you can’t cope with correct pronunciation.
Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up “vocabulary”. Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as “like” and “you know” is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up “interspersed”.
There will be no more ‘bleeps’ in the Jerry Springer show. If you’re not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn’t have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won’t have to use bad language as often.
2. There is no such thing as “US English”. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter ‘u’ and the elimination of ”-ize”.
3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn’t that hard. English accents are not limited to cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents – Scottish dramas such as “Taggart” will no longer be broadcast with subtitles.
While we’re talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is “Devon”. If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become “shires” e.g. Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.
4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast English actors to play English characters. British sit-coms such as “Men Behaving Badly” or “Red Dwarf” will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy American audience who can’t cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.
5. You should relearn your original national anthem, “God Save The Queen”, but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.
6. You should stop playing American “football”. There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American “football” is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays “American” football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game.
Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby which is similar to American “football”, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies. We are hoping to get together at least a US Rugby sevens side by 2005.
You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the ‘World Series’ for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls’ game called “rounders” which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.
7. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don’t believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2nd will be a new national holiday, but only in England. It will be called “Indecisive Day”.
9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.
All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables.
Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.
10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren’t even French; they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called “crisps”. Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.
11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.
12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as “beer”, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as “Lager”. The substances formerly known as “American Beer” will henceforth be referred to as “Near-Frozen Knat’s Urine”, with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as “Weak Near-Frozen Knat’s Urine”. This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.
13. From November 10th the UK will harmonise petrol (or “Gasoline” as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. The UK will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, adopt UK petrol prices roughly $6/US gallon – get used to it).
14 You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you’re not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you’re not grown up enough to handle a gun.
15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us crazy. Tax collectors from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).
16. Last but not the least, and for heaven’s sake…..it’s Nuclear as in “clear” NOT Nucular.
Thank you for your co-operation and have a great day.

Anyone who believes 9/11 was a conspiracy is a complete dumba$$. And if 1/3 of American believe it was, indeed, a conspiracy, it must be all of the immigransts (leagl and illegal). Let me clean this statement of mine a tad. When I say legal and illegal, I'm not being mean. I'm only saying that other than the original takers over of this country we call the USA (white-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants) most immigrants who come to this country do not assemilate.
They want to live in America, but do not want to be Americanized. So, my answer is, stay home. But they do not stay home. More people attempt to gain (and do gain) entry into the US because they can have their cake and eat it too.
Flashman,
You are a hoot! By the way, when we kicked the Britt's butts, we made up new rules, a new language, and new games to play.

i don't beleive that it was conspiracy...but then again it wouldn't shock me either. i listened to an interview on NPR a couple of months ago, and they had a guy on that made some interesting arguements in favor of a conspiracy. unforunatly, i don't remember them clear enough to write them all down here and do them justice. in regards of keeping thousands of people silent, i don't believe that this out the realm of possiblities for the U.S. government. my own brother can't even tell me what he does for a living because of various projects that he has with the CIA and NSA. and he dosen't even have the highest security level in his company. and conspricies of this magnutude, would only envolve the highest levels. also, i'm not sure if it would actually take thousands of people. people can easily be lied to and misdirected to get the main objective accomplished. pawns are used all the time.
in short (again), i don't beleive it...but it wouldn't shock me either

In all seriousness, I have always been totally amazed by the incredible levels of ignorance in our societies - at all levels and in all areas of knowledge. It can knock you off your chair...
Therefore, I am not really surprised that so many people would believe in such a conspiracy.
And FirstRecon, if we were to say that ALL immigrants - legal and illegal - were in those 30%, there would still be 20% left.

I agree with you guys, the 9/11 conspiracy theories are crap. Anyone who believes 9/11 was a conspiracy should read the article from Popular Mechanics (http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/defense/1227842.html) from a year ago that debunks every popular conspiracy theory.
FirstRecon, your right, most of the 1/3 who beleive the conspiracy theories are immigrants. Remember that with the exception of the Native Americans, we are all immigrants to this country!
Flashman, thanks for the Monty Python lines, its good to start the morning with a laugh!
One third? That sounds waaaay off base to me. The government conspiracy angle seems pretty marginal to me yet.
I would think that maybe a third believe that the actual truth behind 9/11 is not necessarily the official story given to us by the government, because there's plenty of data and evidence that casts doubt on it. But to go from there to a third actually believing the government was actively involved in carrying out the 9/11 attacks is ridiculous. I think it's absolutely impossible for the same reasons Raven posted.
Speaking of, anybody watch that Loose Change documentary?

That article takes care of a good number of claims, but there are a lot left out as well.

The idea of 9/11 being a conspiracy, I don't buy. The idea that 1/3 of Americans thinking this, yes, I can buy that. I know there are some out there who still think Iraq had something to do with 9/11. Some still think (less than 40% if polls are a measuring stick)that this adminastration is doing a good job. So yeah, I can see a whole lot of people in this country going for such a wild, un-founded idea. I would not think that they would have to be immigrants, as there are plenty of brain dead to go around.

Do you realize 1/3 of Americans translates into 60 Million people? I also heard on NPR (yes the commie channel) that 2 % of Americans believe n Alien Absuctions so there are 4 million who think htey have been probed without their consent. Its scary, Queen Elizabeth (even Charles and Camilla) are looking better and better

The most literally incredible aspect of this idiocy is not that the U.S. couldn't have brought down the WTC (the U.S. military can bring anything down) or that the governemnt couldn't silence the hundreds of people who would have had to have been involved(maybe the feds could scare that many people into keeping quiet). No, the really incredible, unbelievable, impossible aspect is that there are dozens (hundreds, thousands?) of Americans who would willingly participate in the mass murder of 3,000 of their fellow citizens for any reason. The jackasses who promote this conspiracy are essentially accusing this country of producing AND ELECTING people who are capable of such mind-numbing savagery against their own people. That is an unforgivable insult to any country (well, maybe not Germany or Cambodia) but is especially intolerable here. These people should be spit upon (forgive the misspelling).
I think the attack on the Pentagon is a conspiracy, or in other words I really don't think a plane hit it.
I was very suspicious when I saw the damage inflicted to the Pentagon as compared to other plane crashes and the WTCs.
I also don't like the fact our government won't release security video footage of the alleged plane impacting the Pentagon. What's the security threat of releasing this footage versus the propagating videos of the planes hitting the WTCs and the people jumping from them?
What I think hit it the Pentagon was a missle. Either fired by a terrorist or one of our own war birds attacking something else.

To this I say Firstly I am an Immigrant (sort of and legal might I add). I was adopted at the age of six months. But I do not believe that this was a conspiracy. There is no way that it is possible. Better yet are the people who claim it was a conspiracy for an insurance claim. I take offense to this be even being thought of a conspiracy. Thousands of people gave their time and a great effort to help the victims of thie tradegy. For people to call this a conspiracy is outrageous and idiotic. Tell that to the families of the victims of 9/11 . September 11th, 2001 I can tell were I was when I found out about this. I was a freshmen in highschool, sitting in studyhall. It still sends shivers down my spine thinking of it.
For those of you who live in Minnesota. Next time your at a twins game or watching the game on tv. The September 11th Banner titled "Remember the Hereos" was put help put toghter by my father and some of his freinds.
To those who believe that this was a conspiracy I say this: "Lets not forget how many people lost their lives, family members, and dear freinds. It would be an insult to believe such an idiotic idea that this was a conspiracy." On that day America lost a lot of good but we pulled toghter for those in need. That my freinds is something to be proud of. Let us hope that another event like this shall never happen again.
"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten." -Chris
The fact that we are discussing/debating the possibility that a conspiracy took place is the most tragic aspect of this thread... Sad!
However, I'm not at all surprised that 1/3 of those polled believe in a conspiracy... Half the country still thinks Bush stole the 2000 election... I guess that does bring some relief -- there's some hope for 1/6 of that 50%...
Oh, and a big Thank You to flashman for the Monty Python bit...always have enjoyed them...
