I was not sure how exactly I should search the forum so I decided to throw this out there. I have the circular humidifying devices where you can twist the device to expose or close the holes on it. I have noticed on one of the devices it appears that there is mold (or some white substance)growing on it. I always use either distilled water or propylene glycol to control the humidity. I switched to PG about 3 months ago and it has really held the right humidity for me.
Is there any way I can clean these out without wrecking them? Is it mold, and is it semi-normal to have this happen after awhile? I am going to have to leave for work but wanted to put this on the boards before I forgot. Thanks in advance to everyone!!

from what you have said, i dont think it is mold. mold is usually a green/blue raised substance and it would probably be on the walls of your humidor as well. what you might be dealing with, and guys correct me here if I'm wrong, is plume. now that one you can do a search on.

if you are worried about it. i guess best thing to do would just get another one device perhaps. or switch to silica beads. those are amazing and cheap as hell.

plume would only be on the cigars. Have you ever used regular tap water in the device? If that's the case it can be a build up of salts left behind from evaporated water. I'm not quite sure it's mold since PG is suppose to be anti-fungal. maybe it's a bit of PG that has dried and left behind a white residue?

I don't think it is plume. Like jmunro said, plume is found on cigars. If you had used tap water it could be salt, calcium, or other random chemicals one can find in tap water. BLARG!!!!

The new humidification packets are like $6 or $7 a pieces and work really really well. Have had two for about a month so far. I think they last over 6 monthes. Awesome stuff.

I use both and they work great.
