wouldn't that be the trip of a lifetime

go to scotland on a distrillery toor... visit a whole bunch of distillery and smoke fine cigars while sampling the best scotch scotland has to offer....

create your own pairings...

my dream trip would probably go something like that:

land in glascow

head north and do a tasting and cigar at:

  • Glengoyne
  • Ben Nevis
  • Dalwhinnie
  • Talisker
  • Glenmorangie
  • Highlan Park

and then head back south on the east coast and stop at:

  • Banff
  • Glendronach
  • Lockside
  • Glenkinchie

finally head West to the islands and stop at

  • Laphroig

and fianlly go back to Glascow, and fly back home.. probably still oozie from all the scotch I would have drank in the previous 2 weeks...

one day, I will do this trip.. I'll bring along a box of Trinidad Reyes and a box of Siglo 4

this would go down in history (at leat mine) as the trip of a lifetime....

ahhhhh.. it's good to dream.....

Sal,

This exists. Go to http://www.thequaich.com/
and you can see the next tour is in 2009.

I was a member of the Quaich for a while, until I just ran out of time to attend the events.

But basically for $60 per event you get a 4 course meal, 3 to 5 single malt drams, and some great Scottish history. My wife is Scottish, so sometimes she would attend and I would drink her drams as well.

Some very funny inebriation stories at some of these events, and you meet some fantastic people.

This is exactly where I will be going for my 40th Bday. I plan on some of the same distilleries. but also, Laphroig and Ardbeg are must sees for me. I would agree that(for me) this will be the trip of a lifetime. Scotch, cigars, perhaps take in a few rugby matches.... ahh life is good. Only one bad thing.. I'm 33 Frown

good point about laphroig... although I don't usually like too much islay scotches (too smoky for my taste), I have lately been aquiring a liking for laphroig.

I will add it to my tour

How do you like the Ardbeg 10 year old? I have a bottle and enjoy the musty peaty flavour.

Ever tried the ARDBEG UIGEADAIL cask strength? What is it like?

Steve,

The 10 year old is solid. The Uigeadail is the 2nd best scotch I have ever had. There is also an Ardbeg called the Arigh Nam Beist(sp) that is out of this world. I belong to a few scotch clubs and try to taste as much as I can. Its funny.. some people put their noses in my glass when I have that stuff and they cringe. For me.. it doesnt get any better. Where are you located Steve?

Hi Mat,

What is the best single malt you have ever tried? Mine is 21 Year Old Ashentoshen 55.4%. a total silky explosion of flavor. Not musty or peaty but dense with caramel and maple syrup. Very long finish that starts at the tip of your tongue and works it way back to your throat. The 55.4 % alcohol probably is responsible for this. Triple distilled and unfiltered has left a cloudy mist of proteins in the bottle and adds to the silkiness.

Followed a close second by a 25 year old HighLand Park 55%.

As you can see I prefer cask strength. I will have to look up Arigh Nam Beist and see if it available in Ontario.

I am located in Oakville, Ontario. As mentioned earlier in this thread I was a member of the Quaich, but just ran out of time for the diner and malt tasting meetings.

I would have to say the Laphroig 30 year old. Very peaty and iodiney with a smokiness that is just amazing. The smoke and peat go great with perhaps a Partagas Black or a nice Camacho. Ardbeg was introduced to me about 5 years ago by a fellow rugby player. The 10 year old is great and the Uigeadail is also out of this world. Had an 18 yr Highland Park that was great last week. I also must say that I had Cragganmore 12 yr old over the weekend that was surprisingly smooth and very enjoyable. One of my other top 5's is Caol Ila(whice means I believe "sound of Islay)The 15 and 21 year olds are a much lighter Islay malt. Smokey and peaty.. but also a nice bit of pepper taste. And if you like that Cask Strength, they have a Cask Strength bottling that is hard to find.. but worth the $$. I had it 2x, both at tastings and havent found it since. Sorry to ramble.. glad to see so many who share our hobbies! Cheers

glenmorangie grand excellence or Glenmorangie cote de nuits...

that's all I'll say..

if you ever find any of the 2 (chances are almost nil) buy it.. no matter what it cost..

I'd pay over 500$ for a single bottle of either..

agreed.... I once had a chance to try the madeira cask.... it's the same price range as the port or burgundy cask, but quite harder to find.. it's my favourite specialty cask from glenmorangie... the port wood is a close 2nd though
