Clinton cut the military by about a 1/3. Anyone serving at the time will tell you about all the early retirement buyouts offered then and the lack of incentives for Re-upping.
clinton used us as the world's police man sending our troops all over the world. I and MANY veterans will never forgive him for the disgrace at Somalia. He should have tucked his own tail as well as he made the military do it when he pulled us out.
I love the "we went to Iraq for the oil fields" trip. Yeah, that's why were making so much money off their oil right? But I guess I shouldn't confuse you all with the facts.
Iraq was war mogering and we had no reason to be there, right?.... not at all like the reasons for Haiti, somalia, bosnia...
I guess it's ok for us to back up the UN but ridiculous for them to back us... guess we should have paid them off like sadam did. Maybe that's kerry's plan for getting our "allies" back.
By the way, why is Kerry making a big deal about factories leaving the US and blaming that on Bush when his wife's companies have a ton of factories overseas. In fact, do they have any here?!?

Good riddance to a bad B movie actor. He was asleep at the wheel the last 3 years of his second term. He single-handedly broke the spirit of all unions when he busted the air traffic controller's union and barred them for life from ever getting their jobs back. The only thing he could do was act the part of being president. It was all just a role he played. The last real president we had was Jimmy Carter. A genius! A true statesman, and a man of virtue. What did Reagan do to defeat him? Iran Contra, hostage deal!!!! The Rush clones on this board have a very short memory, or they have been brainwashed. Arms for hostages should have gotten him the firing squad!

Reagan was largely responsible for the collapse of Communism. If he did nothing else besides that, he did more good than Carter and Clinton combined. I was still in junior high when Carter was president but I do recall the "adult" talk about double digit inflation and interest rates. Carter was ineffective as a President. His foreign policies and domestic policies were utter failures. Besides Clinton, he will be known as one of the worst Presidents of the 20th Century. He should have just stuck to picking peanuts and building houses.
Communism was primarily responsible for its own collapse. Gorbachev gave it a little push out the door. If we are not careful, the republicans will be responsible for the collapse of the United States of America, with a little push from Bush.

Kutch, don't bother debating insane rantings with a lunatic. even DC had to cringe at that post.

Sobek, do you even read the quotes you confront me with? My words were "Let's not confuse dementia with humility." Dementia would be a clinical description of Reagan's condition, not a slam.
Reagan told the American people of his condition in November 1994. That doesn't necessarily--or even realistically--mean that the man wasn't manifesting some symptoms of the disease long before his announcement. Most people suffering with Alzheimer's will live an average of 8 years and as many as 20 years or more from the onset of symptoms. The odds are pretty good that he was operating from a functional deficit some time before 1994.

No one in his right mind would think Carter Mondale could have pulled that off.
Actually, Carter was part of a long chain--beginning with Nixon--of engagement with the Soviet Union that made the fall of that system possible. The cultural exchange initiated under this detante was far more responsible for "winning" the Cold War than any ABM program dreamed of by any one man.
By all accounts Reagan was a modest man. The claims made on his behalf are anything but.

What, now you're telling me that wasn't a crack on Reagan's mental state? Sure seems like it to me and every other English speaking person who read that.

Carter...great man, nice guy. Bad president.
Keep posting James. Keep up the good work. You single-handedly ruin the image of liberals.
Sobek, who said anything about me being a liberal? All I want from my government is infastructure, security, and to stay the hell out of my personal life. Don't you remember that the 50+ hostages were released on the first day of Reagan's first term? You don't find that disturbing? You must be a mason, read that freemason!

That's my only complaint about Regan. He should have busted up the rest of the unions. Who the hell needs them anymore. I say get rid of all of them!

Well pin I hope you have the same contempt for FDR who circumvented Congress to fund the atom bomb. And why again did Clinton lose his law license?
FDR did no such thing. The Manhattan project actually grew out of a Navy grant awarded to Columbia University, for the purpose of establishing a prototype for the Atomic Energy Commission. Congress may have been initially kept in the dark as to the exact nature of the project, but this was due more to a sprawling effort that had, until about 1945, yielded few noteworthy successes. Call it a failure of effectual oversight.
Reagan's situation was quite different. A Democratically-controlled Congress passed the Boland Amendment in 1983 (I believe), which explicitly forbade CIA and Department of Defense operations in Nicaragua.
In January 2001, bowing to the expense of a protracted legal fight, Clinton reached an agreement with independent council Robert Ray that suspended his Arkansas law license for 5 yrs. In return, Ray ended the 7 yr. Whitewater probe. There was no perjury conviction most simply because there was no review.

Just a hunch, but a guy who thinks the simile "My dog doesn't lick his balls as much as..." is clever or appropriate probably isn't the best judge of taste or class.
Reagan's "political affiliation" has nothing to do with my objection to the man's stewardship of the office. There are some Republicans I even admire (TR, for one). But Reagan isn't one of them. The comment was irreverent, and only one who revered the man could object to the comment--and for that crowd, anything short of genuflecting every time anyone speaks his name is disrespect.

Big difference between busting on a person with a disease and goofin on a clown.
Even you can figure that out, the second time around.

Because he was found in contempt of court for lying which is perjury. Just because someone isn't convicted doesn't mean he didn't do it.
Congress was kept completely in the dark through much of the research on the bomb, and for damned good reason. I have no problem with it.

Funny, looking over the other posts I count you as the one person who objected to the comment. Every one else apparently understood that I meant no disrespect.
Try not to speak for others sobek. You have a hard enough time representing yourself.

As far as the law is concerned, it really does. Besides which, a settlement isn't legally an admission of guilt.

Pinto, I'm done making a gimp of you in every thread.
You know, for all of his bluster, at least mikeyd knows he's over-the-top. I laugh when I think of you earnestly refashioning yourself as the voice of moderation on these boards. A little late in the game, don't ya think?
The Instant UBBCode should have a "Shriek" function, named in your honor.
This was actually a pretty civil thread, until you--honoring your policy of exaggerate first, read later--took it upon yourself to defend Ronald Reagan from an imagined slight
Battle on, great defender of the Reagan legacy, of the integrity of these boards, and of alarmists everywhere.
There are able defenders of the conservative tradition on these forums. You do them a great injustice every time you post, and are really my most compelling argument against that tradition.
"Crashing" this forum? Trust me, sobek: if this were a real party, you wouldn't be allowed anywhere near it.
