Hi everyone, I'm a collector of old, vintage cigar boxes. Mostly old wooden boxes that are dated with a tax paid stamp from any of the states. I was looking through ebay today and found a great box from 1869 and was wondering if anyone here would have any info on it, if the brand is recognizable to you, ect. Its very interesting because of General Grant and that it is from Massachusetts. Thanks everyone, happy 4th!
I got a little more information on the box for anyone that is interested. Its an 1869 Political cigar box, from the Cuban area Vuelta Abajo. Its a Cuban box with the rare 1868 100 cigar Tax ribbon with handwritten paid date of August 29th, 1869. The Tax ribbon was used until mid 1869 so this was one of the last boxes to have that Tax ribbon I'm told. Also, pretty rare for a Cuban box. Anyways, there seems to be others interested on this box on eBay, so it will be a bid war for sure. Great collectors box I would love this for my collection. Thanks for the interest and replies! Hope this information helps!
Did Tony Hyman tell you that? I will respectfully offer my not so expert opinion: The tobacco was indeed from Vuelta Abajo, Cuba. The box and cigars were made in Mass., thus the markings and U.S. tax stamps, etc. Why else would it have a Mass. factory label on it? Of course, if Tony says the cigars and box were actually made in Cuba, then he is right, and I am wrong.
No doubt this box is rare, collectible and probably not many have survived...starting to feel you are the seller
**Oops, just found the seller's name is Jake through feedback comments. Be nice Jake. Everyone here really seems to value honesty and transparency especially in a selling effort. Is there something you want to tell us?
...Just took a look at bidders on eBay. One of them is a prolific cigar item bidder who's ID is t***h. This could very well be Tony himself.
Good Luck
