I read that one way of killing tabacco beetles is to freeze the cigars. Thats all well and good but while it cracks the larvae and kills the eggs and the adult beetles, the cracked larvae, dead eggs and adults are still in the cigars. Does this effect the taste or discourage anyone from smoking dead beetles? Thanks for your response.

'Smoking Dead Beetles' would be a good name for a rock band.

There are some who advocate freezing all their incoming cigars, and those who only freeze when confonted with an outbreak.
I happen to belong to the latter camp. There are many opinions as to what one does to the future aging properties when freezing cigars, so I prefer to use the method as a last resort. I have not noticed any adverse flavors in cigars I have frozen, but then again, I could have the proverbial palate of the infamous goat...

If you're buying many cubans these days (not that you would do anything illegal), you're buying frozen cigars.

Smoke bug pieces, no biggie... In fact, there are insect fragments and rodent hair in a lot of the packaged food we eat evryday. In most Western countries, there are maximums determined by law and below this, the food inspectors give it the ok. (The CBC had a report on this a few years back)
Also, in many places in the world, the bugs ARE the food. Nothing beats a barbecued grasshoper!
(In those places, if you find a fly in your soup, don't tell the waiter, he'll charge you extra.) Smile
So, I guess smoking beetle larvae would be a pretty "in" thing...

Some people ask what makes certain cigars better than others...those that have that little extra 'something'. Could it be??

you're suppose to not think about them Smile besides, next time you can make a note of a "burn bug character right around the middle of the smoke"

LOL, that's one note I've never seen... "leathery, with hints cheeries and a peppery, dried-bug finish." Eek I've never been able to taste all the things these pretentious reviews say are in there anyway.

The dried beetle is probably the hints of cocoa and hazelnut most people talk about.
